3135 / GEC [TV]

The EURAS repair tip database for professional technicians and service engineers supplies the following faults for 3135 / GEC.

List of fault symptoms:
  • Line stage does not start up. (picture attached)
  • TP29 and TL19 fail after operating for 1 hr. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Power supply pumps when cold, red light flashes.
  • Power supply pulsates intermittently when cold or warm.
  • PSU attempts to start up at intervalls. LED lights. (3135 tips)
  • The lamp is weak.
  • No TV picture and humming from loud-speaker.
  • Switches to standby (after start-up). (picture attached)
  • To improve operation of mute circuit.
  • Tripping. after a few minutes (intermittently). (3135 tip from GEC)
  • Dark picture. after a while.
  • Power supply voltage: 15V: 8V; 140: 80V. The same with the line transformer disconnected.
  • PSU switches off after start-up.
  • No picture, only snow. in PIP.
  • Standby light lights up for 2 seconds then goes off. Appliance does not start up.
  • Raster weakened after a few mins and is reduced to a horizontal lines then TV goes into standby. (3135 GEC repair tip)
  • At switch on colour is delayed.
  • Grey picture with 6 flyback lines without picture content. (service info for GEC -3135)

  • Streaky luminance and flyback lines.
  • Line transistor S2000AF heats up then fails. E-W geometry ok.
  • Switches off immediately without becoming bright. (picture attached)
  • PSU doesn't start up intermittently.
  • When cold picture is very white with flyback lines and hum in sound.
  • Goes into standby after reducing the frame to a horizontal line after a few mins.
  • Coloured tinge in picture.
  • No contrast control.
  • Power supply fuse blows at switch on. Everything seems ok.
  • Picture pulling on bright scenes.
  • Does not start up from standby, cracking is audible and appliance switches OFF, standby LED switches off.
  • The appliance fails, no picture, no sound, base raster or horizontal lines.

  • Picture is at the lower picture edge and in time becomes a line. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • White screen. Sparks between pins 6/7.
  • Switches on, line transformer comes on then goes into standby immediately.
  • TL19 (S2000 AF) is S/C after switch on.
  • After a short time the US voltage increases so that the TV cuts out.
  • Arcing in picture. at top.
  • Modification to improve AGC adjustment.
  • Horizontal line. at bottom.
  • No picture. via SCART. Audio OK .

  • Trapezium distortion on top in picture, no functions.

  • No volume control via RC.
  • Faulty OSD.
  • With high contrast PSU trips then starts again. Occurs randomly. (picture attached)
  • Snow on the screen.
  • Poor start up performance of the power supply.

  • At switch on, front LED flashes irregularly or remains fixed. (picture attached)
  • Line output transistor overheats. (picture attached)
  • At switch on the light comes on. CTV starts up then cuts out,no light, crackling noise at the level of the power supply transformer. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Reduced horizontal size.
  • Secondary voltages are low. (3135 tip from GEC)
  • Incorrect oscillations on line BU (S2055).
  • Does not start up. Ok if power supply is 110V. Normal scanning.
  • Flag effect when playing back with a VPH6400 Thomson VCR. Ok via scart.
  • At start up functions normally for 20 to 50 secs then goes into standby prematurely. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • US voltage is 57V. If you unplug pin 3 from the line stage transformer the voltage returns to 113V. Line stage transformer has been changed.
  • Faint sound although correct.
  • Goes into standby after a few secs. Appliance and EHT start up well at switch on.
  • TV only starts up very rarely, when it does start up, RL26 smokes, the deflectors heat up and smoke, distorted picture and the colours fade.
  • White dotted lines appear on left of picture in VHF/Band I reception.
  • Fuse FP2 (630mA) blows.
  • Fault at top of picture about 4cm after 30 mins.
  • Too much EHT.
  • Picture is somewhat noisy.

  • Horizontal white line. at bottom.
  • Poor start up of PSU. Occasionally starts up but sometimes does not, especially when warming up. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Switches on but no user controls from front control panel nor from RC. Does not even switch to FF.
  • Intermittently trips off for approx 1 sec.
  • Switches off after approx 3 secs. PSU switches on with brief chirping noise and then switches off. (3135 tips)
  • White line. in the centre.

  • Switches to protection mode. intermittently.

  • Poor switch off of picture tube.
  • Volume of basic adjustment is too loud.

  • Appliance switches off, when screen changes and starts up right away.
  • Slow start-up.
  • No start-up from PSU.
  • The grey scale is incorrect.
  • Vertical amplitude is too low.
  • Shuts down.
  • Low supply voltages.

  • After a few minutes the screen goes black and motor boating occurs.

  • Chroma fault occurs although the tuning discriminators and the grey scale function correctly.
  • Vertical compression and very dark picture, more on the right than on the left. (3135 tips)

  • PSU fails immediately after start-up.
  • Power supply crackles once then dead.

  • Wavy picture.
  • No power supply regulation.

  • Black picture like in AV at switch on. OSD and channel display function. In AV picture ok but no reception via the aerial. No snow.
  • Incorrect picture height. Black 5cm bar at bottom, black 2cm bar at top of picture.
  • Set is dead but not tripping.
  • No function from RC, ok from front panel. RC receiver ok. (picture attached)

  • Tuning drifts.
  • Power supply chopper blows.
  • Line output transformer arcing.
  • Grey adjustment: picture tube board.
  • TL19 fails in line output stage.
  • Functions for 5 mins then all the channel numbers begin to run through constantly while each time the picture comes up again and RCU does not function.
  • Chroma decoding.
  • After switch on, vertical centering is shifted intermittently upwards approx. 2 cm; it goes to normal position after approx. 10 minutes.
  • Crackling in the speaker at start up and at switch off including standby. Slight noise in the speaker in standby. Occasionally trips at start up.
  • BU 508A in the power supply gets too hot and goes defective after approx 5 minutes. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Blows on a white picture. Power supply as new.
  • Control board CDI 2000.
  • Remains in standby. Hum in loudspeakers. (picture attached)
  • Blue tint in picture intermittently. (GEC - 3135 information)
  • Slight reduction of raster amplitude.
  • After a few mins switches to standby. After some time can be switched on again from RC. (picture attached)
  • No voltage.
  • Stops intermittently. LED remains red. TV does not start up again with the channel button. Necessary to press the standby button then the channel button. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • No line output funtion. OK at switch on.
  • White screen in scart and no sound. Picture ok via tuner. Displays programmes and sound level etc.
  • Repeated failure of chopper transistor TP29 (BUH515). (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Occasionally loss of station memory. When warm stations run through from 1 to 39 without loss of station memory.
  • Slight raster scanning in the middle of the screen.
  • No sawtooth signal on raster. Horizontal bar appears at bottom of picture.

  • Goes into safety mode for no apparent reason, after operating for 30 mins. Starts up again from the switch.
  • Stuck in standby. LED is red . (picture attached)
  • No memory during programming.
  • Switches to protection mode. when cold.
  • No more line scanning possible. RL25 cuts out.
  • Crackling effect on video and echo. (3135 tips)
  • Memory loss or random deprogramming of uP.
  • Ticking, then PSU switches off.
  • Vertical bars. on the left.
  • No sound with a Nintendo game. Game functions on another TV. (picture attached)
  • In breakdown mode with 2.2K, pin 20 and 32 have been removed, EHT but 300V pulsates instead of 600 or 700V. 100V at the start of video but everything collapses if you refit DL13.
  • Switches off by itself. intermittently. Standby LED lit .
  • Position of RA13 and RA15.
  • Does not start up. Standby lit. Slight motor noise in speaker.

  • No start-up. LED blinks .
  • No horizontal synchronisation.
  • Fuse and TP29 fail repeatedly.
  • Dark picture. Can only be slightly adjusted.
  • Faint picture because CRT was defective.

  • Volume varies (intermittently).
  • Fluctuations of the picture according to the video content.

  • Normal sound, white screen, no picture, flyback lines. Impossible to reduce the brightness. (3135 tips)
  • Hyperband re-fitting.
  • No start up of power supply. No standby light. No noise.
  • Appliance in burst mode. No standby light.
  • At switch on the vertical centering is off by 2cm at the top.

  • Maximum luminance.
  • Dim picture.
  • Vertical picture has shifted to top by approx 2cm at switch on. Picture OK after approx 10 mins.
  • Appliance switches off and switches on again, changes channel and there are great variations in the beam current.

  • HV and U-sys too low.
  • Occasionally there is no light at all.
  • IR01 loses memory without any apparent reason.
  • TV stops and starts up again immediately. Standby light is on.

  • The channel nos run through, no sound or picture but it works in video.

  • Starts for one sec and goes into standby with a hum in the loudspeaker.
  • Picture and sound disappear after a few days or even after 5-6 hours operation. Standby stays on. Switching off and on help for a while.
  • Humming on sound and the screen is dark. The appliance goes to stand-by after 2-5 minutes.
  • Excessive vertical size.
  • Only noise on screen, screen menu cannot be superimposed. Appliance does not react to the RCU or to control panel commands.
  • Vertical foldover.
  • No colour, only on French channel "La 3".
  • Power supply starts up for a few secs then collapses while pumping on standby light.
  • Grey scale incorrect. Yellow-green picture. High voltage on the blue cathode (170V). Voltage on the red cathode, as well as on the green, is normal (135V).

  • No reception. EHT flashovers.

  • Ignition on the EHT (flame). (picture attached)

  • Occasionally TV does not start up and remains in standby.
  • TDA8178 heats up too much and blows.

  • Goes into SAFETY mode and very slight hum in LF.
  • White picture and flyback line. New FBT. S2055AF replaced by S2000AF which heats up and blows after a min.

  • In playback, especially with prerecorded cassettes the picture oscillates horizontally or is distorted like a flag in the top part of the screen.

  • Starts up then switches off. Remains in standby when cold.
  • Vertical lines are distorted horizontally. E/W equalizer can not be adjusted correctly.

  • Vertical lines are jagged.

  • Picture has vertically shifted with approx. 2cm towards top after start-up. Picture ok after approx. 10 mins.
  • At start up there is a power supply fault. TP29 must be replaced. After this the picture lacks vertical and horizontal amplitude. Reduced picture which has shifted to the bottom of the screen. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Teletext clock stops. Each 5cm high part of the picture is missing.
  • 1 flyback transformer pulse then standby. If the picture appears, one time out of five there is crackling in the transformer then standby.
  • Loud noise when switching on TV via mains. Can be intermittent.
  • Fuse cuts out without apparent reason.
  • Tripping sound from flyback transformer, sometimes no picture, another time it switches itself OFF. (3135 tips)

  • Primary power supply fails under load.

  • Does not find channels or finds one channel tuned incorrectly.

  • Attempts to start then smoke appears.

  • Over-accentuated fizzling sounds.
  • Switches off intermittently (often at programme switch).
  • At switch on, control panel LED remains red and flickers faintly.

  • Vertical line approx 1/3 from left of picture. Hardly visible, but annoying.
  • S2055 defective after switch-on.
  • Vertical stage is stuck.
  • Intermittently shuts down briefly (sometimes after two hours).
  • No horizontal deflection. Audio OK .
  • Black stripes on upper and lower picture edge.
  • Switches to standby.
  • Picture is slightly displaced towards bottom of screen.

  • Slight raster distortion at top or bottom of screen, depending on defective diode.
  • TP29 has a short circuit and FP01 blows after a short time.
  • Picture shrinks and a white band appears at bottom of screen after a short period of time.
  • No picture. No sound. Switches off after 3 secs, remains in standby and has an afterglow fleck. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Following a fault on the line there is no colour. Composite video is ok on 53 of IV01 but there is no RGB on 41, 42 and 43.
  • Tube tries to switch on then switches off. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Noise in the HP power supply. The appliance goes to stand-by and starts up again. Dark screen and after 3 minutes the appliance returns to stand-by.

  • No start-up. LED is red .

  • In stand-by the light does not light up and the TV does not come on again.
  • Four vertical bands on top of screen.

  • After some time, picture cuts out then returns immediately, standby light weakens but stays on, then CTV has a frizzy picture.
  • Occasionally horizontal tearing and horizontal stripes. Same faults via aerial and in scart.

  • Plastic effect. Does not decode Channel +.
  • Picture breaks up and crackles on sound.

  • Standby LED flashes bright and dark.
  • Saving new basic adjustments such as brightness.
  • FBT is s/c twice a year. On collector TL19. 1200V instead of 1000V. CL21, CL22, CL24, CL23 replaced but fault persists. US adjusted to 143V. FBT 470034-81 CTV TA6326.
  • TV starts up for a few secs and leaves a motor noise in the speaker. By disconnecting DL13, the appliance starts up again.
