VM9500 / NIKON [Camcorder - Hi8]

The EURAS repair tip database for professional technicians and service engineers supplies the following faults for VM9500 / NIKON.

List of fault symptoms:
  • Does not load tape.
  • Only loads partially.
  • Rusted shaft or dirt collected on the shaft cannot be removed using cloth moistened with alcohol.
  • Right lacing arm does not load and can be pushed to and fro.
  • The roller guide may halt during loading or unloading
  • Viewfinder is defective.

  • Capstan rotates but take-up reel does not.
  • No functions. No eject. (VM9500 tips)
  • Service information: mechanism.
  • The TG3/TG6 guide roller on the left/right coaster assy of U/U' mechanism models may be dislocated.
  • Part number information. Alignment tapes for Hi-8.
  • The T reel touching the cassette case causes chattering noise during the REV mode. (NIKON - VM9500 information)
  • Tape guide roller does not function during lacing up or unlacing.
  • Picture becomes white in Camera mode.
  • Tape gets chewed/wrinkled. Tape path failure. The coaster subassembly does not function during loading or unloading.
  • Take-up reel judders in playback and FF.
  • When loading or unloading tape, appliance blocks intermittently.
  • After AC power on, the coaster may vibrate resulting in abnormal initializing. (NIKON - VM9500 information)
  • The reel torque value is out of the specified 7-19 g.cm value (in FWD mode).
  • Horizontal shift.
  • Loose LCD assembly.
  • Tape movement: tape curls.
  • It gets stuck during any function after a few seconds.
  • No take up. Appliance switches off after a short time.
  • When EJECT selected, appliance goes to FF then ejects.
  • Tape riding up pinch roller.
  • A noise bar may appear on the picture during recording or playback (tape path failure).
  • Part no. addition - D999.
  • Irregular unloading or ejection of tape under vibration. The cassette compartment may unlock when subject to a mechanical shock after cassette down operation.
  • Service information. Changes to the mechanical chassis of the U mechanism.
  • Tape stuck. (VM9500 tips)
  • Incorrect tape-end detection.
  • Deformed housing bearing.
  • Large T reel torque fluctuations occur during playback.
  • Formula to calculate D77' when automatic white balance is defective.
  • Part number information. Part number - S reel table.
  • Mechanical operation problem. The reel rotation sensors are easily damaged.
  • Part number information. Add the part numbers for FP162 and FP203 to the service manual.
  • No unloading or ejecting of tape. The cassette lid catches and remains open in eject mode so it is not possible to take the cassette out.
  • Tape jams when switching from PLAY to FF and drum stops.
  • Tape loading not completed.
  • Tape guides shift.
  • May not eject at all, or may damage tape by failing to rewind during eject.
  • No unloading or ejecting of tape intermittently. No eject, tape jamming or tape damage especially at the start of a tape.
  • Supply tension of the supply reel reduces occasionally from the standard value 9-12 g/cm (in FWD mode) to 2-4 g/cm. (service info for NIKON -VM9500)
  • No eject, drum spins, capstan spins but loading motor doesn't turn.
  • TG3/TG6 guide roller on the left/right coaster assy of U/U' mechanism models may be dislocated.
  • Waterfall effect.
  • Set does not lace up.
  • Part number information. Drum assembly replacement.
  • Laces up without a cassette, mode motor shunts forwards and backwards then quits.
  • A tape guide which is positioned in the mechanism is loose and is blocking the loading of the cassette.
  • Service manual adjustment. This bulletin lists average evr adjustment data.
  • Service information. Evr service software.
  • Irregular mechanical operation. The reel may stop rotating occasionally and the service mode will display 00:02 or 00:03 (last emergency).
  • Jig availability. A modified RM95 remote commander is available as a servicing jig.
  • No eject. Switches off by itself.
  • Eats tape.
  • Noisy audio in certain conditions. Af mechanical noise may be recorded when the microphone is set to the HiFi position.
  • Failure to load/eject. Arms move in and out continuously until the fault sign appears.
  • Tape is damaged. intermittently.
  • The coaster subassembly does not function during loading or unloading.
  • No eject. (VM9500 NIKON repair tip)
  • Part no. info. - FP203.
  • After switching on both reel motors run at a higher speed.
  • The reel rotation sensors are easily damaged.
  • Iris remains open in automatic mode. Only closes in manual mode.
  • No mechanical functions.
  • During EJECT, take-up reel spins fast.
  • Adjustment information. The part of the autofocus adjustment using the siemens star as detailed in the service manual needs to be amended.
  • Service manual adjustment. Lens block adjustment and check procedure.
  • Difficult cassette lid removal.
  • Intermittently picture collapses into lines.
  • Deformed housing bearing.
  • Appliance blocks occasionally when the tape is unloaded. The loading motor also stops suddenly where it is. (NIKON - VM9500 information)
  • Drum motor functions intermittently. High pitched sound.
  • Picture shaking. The playback picture may sometimes show horizontal cogging on verticals.
  • Tape spooling out of head, pinch roller not turning.
  • Tape damage during review.
  • Does not load tape. No capstan rotation.
  • Servo motor accelerates and slows down intermittently.
  • No unloading or ejecting of tape. See also service bulletin CV00194.
  • Does not load tape. No eject. Fault occurs intermittently. .
  • No loading. Tape gets chewed or wrinkled. Tape path failure. Coaster subassembly does not function during loading or unloading.
  • Defective eject and tape run/battery lamp blinks.
  • Service information. Wiping cloth for video heads and drum. (VM9500 tip from NIKON)
  • Focus motor does not stop, does not focus.
  • Crosstalk in certain mode. It is possible that AM transmissions may become audible when connecting an external mic to the unit. (VM9500 tip from NIKON)
  • Motor noise. Capstan motor ticking noise.
  • Power problem. No back up by lithium battery.
  • Service information. Note on autofocus operation with zoom at wide end.
  • The S-reel torque value is out of the specified 17-29 g.cm value (in REV mode).
  • Stripes in picture after 2 mins then picture disappears. (VM9500 tips)
  • No eject due to shock or external force.
  • On PB, the vertical lines are bent.
  • Jig availability. Cpa jig for evr adjustments.
  • Irregular mechanical operation. Intermittent loading/unloading.
  • Mechanical noise. (VM9500 tips)
  • Dead.
  • Does not accept tape.
  • Lens control does not function. Lens remains closed.
  • Camcorder switches off. Protective circuit symbol blinks.
  • Loading motor does not function. Does not lace up tape.
  • VCR skew error. Horizontal stripes in picture.
  • Service manual adjustment. Correction for FP-164 and FP-158 flexible boards.
  • Defective loading. (service info for NIKON -VM9500)
  • Mechanism tries to unload but stops before it gets half-way.
  • No threading in.
  • Tape entrance and exit path out of alignment. (NIKON - VM9500 information)
  • No eject. Triangle flashes in display after several seconds.
  • FL cassette compartment installation.
  • Large S reel torque fluctuations occur during the REV mode.
  • Cassette compartments does not open.
  • Cassette compartment opens intermittently.
  • Zoom does not function.
  • Irregular mechanical operation. Tape path problems.
  • Certain cassettes stick on the take up reel terminals, resulting in a lacing up or tape transport fault.
