VN5000 / NIKON [Camcorder - 8mm]
The EURAS repair tip database for professional technicians and service engineers
supplies the following faults for VN5000 / NIKON.
List of fault symptoms:
- Unit will not close door. When applying power, mechanism ejects OK, but will not set back to load/unload state.
- Does not REC picture, only sound.
- Part number information. The shape of the drum base and the guide rail base has changed. (NIKON - VN5000 information)
- Will not load tapes (intermittently no rewind). Mechanism only half loads then slowly attempts to finish.
- After 5 min. no sound in playback.
- Ticking noise from mechanism in all modes.
- Switches continuously from SP to LP.
- No picture.
- How to check crystal oscillator. (VN5000 tips)
- No playback, head rotating in wrong direction.
- Blurred, jumping picture in viewfinder. Impossible to adjust picture sharpness.
- ATF servo fails during PB.
- When in REW, drum reverses. When loading the drum slows down, then the tape is unloaded. (VN5000 NIKON repair tip)
- No picture intermittently. In play mode the picture may blank after playing a few seconds, periodically re-appearing.
- No camera picture recorded. EE picture ok
- Part number information. Replacement of leaf switch for Q (fl) mechanism.
- Closes and starts to load, then jams.
- No PB luminance.
- Mechanical noise. Mechanical noise during rew, or noise captured during REC.

- Sound fails after 5 mins PB.
- Intermittently blocks.
- Mechanical noise in REW, PB and REC.
- Does not accept cassette. Mechanical crunching noise. (service info for NIKON -VN5000)
- Chroma emphasis adjustment.
- No Eject. Caution LED flashing. E-E OK.
- Part number information. Changes in cassette holder assembly. (VN5000 tip from NIKON)
- Emphasis input level adjustment.
- FL mechanism changes.
- Switching position adjustment.
- Flying erase check.
- Feedback chroma adjustment.
- Sync AGC adjustment.
- Service information. Evr microprocessor data transfer on board replacement. (VN5000 tip from NIKON)
- Only about half of picture is visible horizontally in the EVF.
- Cassette stuck in appliance and "caution" warning is displayed.
- REC Y level adjustment.
- Automatic focus and zoom fail intermittently.
- Left and right audio separation poor on self record.
- No eject intermittently. Capstan motor possibly doesn't rotate. Intermittently ejects. Capstan motor not rotating.
- Does not load tape.
- Caution light on when loading.
- Date and time erased when power removed.
- Eats tape.
- RK gear goes under supply reel in REW and breaks.
- Irregular loading. The cass tape may stick to the drum resulting in the tape being ejected. (last emergency - drum pg error).
- Warning LED flickers.
- Transport noise in FF, REW and PB.
- Appliance will not record any camera picture. EE picture is ok.
- Mechanism loads halfway without cassette, rewinds a few seconds and stops.
- No playback or record colour.
- Spare parts information - Crystal X801 on AU86 board.
- Loads tape then ejects immediately.
- Unstable picture. Oil on the tape or on the tape path may cause picture distortion, head clogging, tape eject or no drum rotation.
- Buzz.
- No mechanical operation. The bulletin illustrates a procedure to be followed to determine if the T reel and S reel need replacement.
- System clock adjustment.
- No picture in E to E mode. There is no video output in the camera mode whereas in the player mode the video output proves faultless.
- PB Y level 1 adjustment.
- Does not REC Y signal. Correct monitoring.
- EVF picture dark. E-E OK.
- No eject. Other functions OK . (VN5000 tip from NIKON)
- Unit loads half way. Drum fails to change direction, then unit unloads.
- Does not load tape. No drum/head rotation.
- Part number information. The FP-182 flexible board listed in the service manual does not include its connector. The numbers are listed below. (VN5000 NIKON repair tip)

- Door will not close.
- Does not accept tape. (service info for NIKON -VN5000)
- Loading motor is not driven. Does not load cassettes and does not eject them.
- Tape spills out when REW is selected.
- No eject.
- Low audio level. Low level microphone sound.
- REC C RF level adjustment.
- Tape stuck in mechanism, no functions. Loads OK.
- Doesn't load cassette. Creaking noise from the mechanism.
- Loss of Y signal after a few minutes. (service info for NIKON -VN5000)
- Clicking noise in picture search function. (VN5000 NIKON repair tip)
- No E-E colour.
- The take up reel table does not rotate with an inserted cassette.
- Cassette compartment will not release. (VN5000 tip from NIKON)
- Cassette ejects but new cassette cannot be inserted.
- Intermittently does not accept tape.
- Eject inop ( TG-1 lever comes off it's guide ) (VN5000 tip from NIKON)
- TG1 arm falls out.
- Poor REC and PB luminance. Signal OK on IC203-31 but not pin 30.
- Sometimes no sound is recorded.
- Mechanical noise.
- Mechanism jammed. intermittently.
- Speed problem. T guide arm and rail base guide replacement procedure.
- Part number information. Rotary upper drum assembly replacement.
- Half picture with vertical white line. E-E picture OK.
- Ejection of cassettes is defective, blocked mechanically.
- Intermittent transport.
- Blocks intermittently during tape unloading.
- Does not load tape. intermittently.
- The zoom motor turns constantly and does not stop even if the T/W button is kept pressed down.
- No eject. Powers down with caution indicator blinking.
- No tape loading, loads ok without a tape. No drum rotation.
- Destroys under side of tape.
- Does not accept tape. Closes OK without one.
- Does not load tape. No eject. Fault occurs intermittently. .
- Switches off after a short time. Take-up reel jolts. (VN5000 tips)
- Mechanical noise. Mechanical noise during rew, or noise captured during REC.
- Failure of flexible membrane may result in various faults.
- Part number information. The springs of the FL mechanism have been changed. There is no compatibility with the former types.
- Tape jams.
- Capstan FG offset adjustment.
- Delay burst phase adjustment.
- PB Y level 2 adjustment.
- Irregular capstan motor.
- Camera switches off again immediately since the supply table is not driven.
- No unloading or ejecting of tape.. Although the unloading operation during eject is normal the cassette compartment does not rise.
- Broken focus ring, zoom OK.
- Lens problem after being dropped. Zoom/focus shaft may spring out of its fittings when the unit is dropped.
- Cassette compartment won't rise (VN5000 NIKON repair tip)
- EVF video weak and out of sync.
- Drum runs at high speed when power is applied.
