20DV213 / PHILIPS [Video recorder - VHS HiFi]

List of fault symptoms:
  • Lift guides are broken.
  • When the stop button is pressed, the appliance unlaces partly and stops.
  • The reel table turns in the wrong direction during play.
  • Appliance takes the cassette in but the transport ring does not move.
  • Tape moves to base position (stop) , then no drive function.
  • Blocked, functions slowly.
  • No tape end switch off.
  • No mechanical functions. Drum runs continuously.
  • F7 occasionally, switches off; tape loops.
  • Failure to load cassette or to eject a cassette or intermittently doing either.

  • Tape creases.
  • The compartment does not lower, the tape slides over the black tape lever and creases occasionally. (service info for PHILIPS -20DV213)
  • Vibration of tape lever (left in drive) when lacing up.
  • Tape tension fault. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Appliance laces up and unlaces too fast.
  • Appliance does not lace up, the black tape lever does not engage during play.
  • Tape transport is defective. Occasionally picture has interference lines. Extreme variations in sound.
  • Does not lace up the tape.
  • Occasionally the cassette does not move in.
  • Tape creasing in search mode.
  • Appliance does not unlace at the beginning or end of tape.
  • The compartment does not lower correctly, the tape slips off the black tape lever and becomes creased.
  • Appliance does not accept the cassette, only in service function A5.
  • Appliance does not lace tape in entirely and/or makes noise.
  • Appliance does not lace up, because the sensor lever (pos.nr. 88 in the exploded diagram) does not move forward in the output position.
  • Does not load tape. intermittently. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • After insertion, the cassette will not stay in the appliance.
  • When cassette lowers reel tables of cassette it may not go into reel bobby and cassette is blocked mechanically.
  • The cassette sinks in but only laces up partly, the display shows F1.
  • Brake electro-magnet does not work.
  • At the end of REW cassette stops suddenly and breaks occasionally. Right at the start of the tape only laces up after 5 or 6 attempts. Start up in PB ok.
  • Spontaneous eject in the LP mode. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • No time and date indication on the display. Tape time does not change during playback or forward and rewind. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • The head is dirty.
  • Lower edge of tape damaged.
  • Cassette is retracted. No initilisation operation. If then Play is pressed, appliance displays F1. FF and REW OK.
  • The brass tape lever near the pinch roller shatters during playback. The take up reel table turns jerkily.
  • FF and REW too slow, all other functions ok.
  • After playing for a long time, the appliance will not unlace.
  • Intermittent tape damage with "7" displayed during rewind.
  • After the on/off switch on the video has been off all night and the plug has been pulled out, the cassette is not accepted. But if not unplugged no difficulties.
  • Cassette compartment does not eject. Tape loading motor runs. (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • Drive does not turn.
  • The cassette is not always lowered. (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • Tape is damaged at the lower edge of the tape.
  • Drive accepts cassette. Tape is laced up. When unlacing compartment is not up enough.
  • During play the tape creases on the pinch roller capstan shaft.
  • VCR does not load the cassettes. Relay blows when you insert the cassette. When you load the cassette manually, it ejects it normally. F1 is displayed when cassette is not loaded. (picture attached)
  • Sporadic drive blocks. F3/F7 in display.
  • The tape gets stuck when rewinding with visible picture. Left reel no longer has friction.
  • In eject tape is not pulled back completely into the cassette. When removing cassette, tape remains hanging on the loading pole.
  • Appliance chews lower edge of tapes during REC.
  • Occasionally the cassette does not lower. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • The appliance does not unlace correctly. The pinion lever does not engage with the transport ring and the cassette compartment does not come up.
  • Not fully loading.
  • The cassette is not taken, also not in service function A5. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Cassette is not accepted, no error display.
  • Poor cassette loading cassette gets stuck.
  • The lacing ring turns too slowly and sometimes stops.
  • Ejects at PB or FF.
  • Appliance accepts the cassette when Play, FF or REW is pressed, appliance switches to Eject.
  • The right reel table does not turn.
  • Chew tapes and/or shuts down.
  • Pinch roller replacement. (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • The appliance does not accept the cassette, not even during service function A5.
  • Chewed tapes. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Loads poor or wrong mechanical commands.
  • Tape chatters in FF and REW, counter runs forwards.
  • Cassette loading is difficult. Cassette has to be helped manually. Everything else ok.
  • In service function A 5 the compartment lowers, the capstan shaft runs immediately. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • The brake solenoid rattles. (picture attached)
  • Cassette compartment lowers, the motors do not turn. (picture attached)
  • The cassette compartment does not come up.
  • Tape is damaged. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Intermittently stops and unlaces during play.
  • Cassette is loaded and ejected after a few seconds. Head drum does not start.
  • No switch off at the end of tape, the tape runs backwards.
  • The cassette is pulled in and laces up but the appliance does not recognise end of tape. A crackling noise can be heard. (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • Appliance is laced up, although the cassette compartment is up.
  • Hook for the spring of the REC lock pos. 1 is broken.
  • Moire in the picture at PB, in particular coloured areas. (20DV213 tips)
  • Accepts cassette; loading ring begins to move then stalls.
  • Does not accept tape. intermittently.
  • Drive blocks when unlacing before the stop position is reached. Cassette cannot be ejected.
  • After forward or rewinding for a short time, the appliance switches off and F6 is shown on the display
  • The cassette is not lowered. Only the video head turns during service function A5. The brake lifting magnet rattles after a short time.
  • Transport ring stops during unlacing.
  • Holder for the pulse roller pos.110 and 107 is defective.
  • No tape end switching. At tape start/end, F7 is displayed after FF or REW. Appliance does not go to stop.
  • Cassette occasionally does not sink in and the solenoid switches. The cassette only sinks in when the lacing belt is touched.
  • Creases tape in search mode.
  • Irregular drive movements.
  • Picture is distorted in EE or freeze frame.
  • The tape is not accepted. No other functions
  • The video recorder recognises uncontrolled tape end. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • When pressing PLAY button, occasionally appliance does not start and cassette is ejected. (PHILIPS - 20DV213 information)
  • The appliance breaks the tapes, "F7" is displayed (no tape end detection).
  • The cassette is ejected after approximately 5 seconds. When the cassette is loaded, the drive is blocks before reaching the stop position.
  • No rewind/review shuts down when review is selected. Sometimes it ejects the cassette.
  • Spare part no. info: Power supply repair kits. (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • The lacing mechanism is jammed. The appliance does not function.
  • Ejects tapes (will not fully load).
  • Cassette unlaces.
  • Tapes are damaged or chewed.
  • Does not load cassette completely.
  • Play spool not rotating.
  • No FF. No REW.
  • Cassette compartment does not come out. Worm wheel moves back and forth. Brake solenoid switch opens and closes.
  • The pinch magnet does not pull in.
  • Poor tape compatibility, tracking has to reset every tape played.
  • The drive accepts the cassette, the tape laces up. The cassette is not pushed entirely above when reeling up.
  • wrong side when playing
  • The appliance laces up, the video head runs and the appliance unlaces.
  • Cassette compartment does not lower.
  • The cassette flap does not open.
  • Cassette compartment does not lower. Display shows fault indication F1, Eject also does not function. (20DV213 tips)
  • Displays F6 as soon as cassette inserted, rewinds and stops suddenly. No function except eject. (20DV213 tips)
  • The tape laces up but the appliance does not switch to playback because the lacing process has not been finished.
  • The cassette is stuck in the appliance and the video won't function. Time cannot be adjusted also programmes occasionally do not function.
  • Cassette is pulled in, but there is no other function. No initialisation sequence, display shows F 7.
  • Incorrect tape end switch off. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • No drive function or tape stop in the coated part on video cassettes of manufacturers which are not well-known.
  • After REV picture search, incorrect tracking at tape exit. Tracking OK during PB.
  • Lacing procedure gets stuck, the tape is out and the right reel table does not turn.
  • Loads cassette but unloads it again immediately. Error message F3 on the display. (20DV213 tips)
  • Intermittently mechanism stops running when warm. Very noisy capstan operation.
  • Appliance does not accept cassette and makes strange noises.
  • No cassette up or down. May be intermittent. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Tape catches on right roller unit.
  • The tape is cut at the lower edge of the tape on the guide flange no 147.
  • Cassette ejected when any function is selected. Drive functions with stabilised power supply.
  • The brake solenoid rattles when the cassette lowers. (20DV213 tips)
  • The video head turns on and unlaces after a short time. F4 indication. Everything is O.K. in service function A5. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Cassette compartment jams when pushed in.
  • Powers down making no attempt to EJECT fully loaded tape. (20DV213 tips)
  • The cassette compartment does not lower properly. The lacing motor turns.
  • The cassettes are not ejected or else they are stuck in the cassette compartment.
  • Intermittently ejects tape while in play or record, especially in the LP mode and E4 or E5 in the error memory. (picture attached)
  • Display is inoperative or displays . No function.
  • Intermittently stops. in PB or REC.
  • Noises when a new cassette is lowered onto the reel table. F1 on display. No cassette accepted. Occurs especially with new cassettes.
  • Tapes are crumpled. Pinch roller has already been replaced. Sometimes the tape is pressed up against the pinch roller. (PHILIPS - 20DV213 information)
  • Sound interferes with picture.
  • Cassette is not accepted and appliance is blocked. (part of circuit diagram displayed) (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • The cassette is not pulled in correctly.
  • The right reel table does not turn. Appliance forms tape loops and shows F 6 on the display.
  • Cassette catches in cassette compartment at pos 217 when using newer video cassettes.
  • After the cassette has sunk in the tape is creased or broken.
  • Some tapes do not lace up, E30 and dummy cassette ok. (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • Cassette tray goes out and back in at switch on, then difficult to eject the cassette. Display flashes quickly, sometimes until total switch off.
  • No lift command. (service info for PHILIPS -20DV213)
  • After playing for 1-2 hours the display shows F2. Tape is creased by the tape transport guide lever.
  • Tape is destroyed by the pinchroller (new pinchroller). Lacing up of tape is ok.
  • Does not accept tape. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • In PB tape runs backwards. (PHILIPS - 20DV213 information)
  • Occasionally no FF or REW.
  • Tape crinkles near the capstan spindle. The spindle and pinch roller have been replaced without success.
  • The cassette laces up too slowly.

  • The cassette is not lowered, no A5 service function. F1 is shown. (20DV213 tips)
  • Appliance only unlaces partly and only stops when you press the stop button.
  • Take-up torque is missing, ok when using dummy cassette. (PHILIPS - 20DV213 information)
  • Eats tape.
  • Appliance occasionally squeaks when lacing up or unlacing. Does not eject because the lacing belt slips off.
  • Unlaces after a while. F3 in display. Distorted picture and sound.
  • Brake solenoid does not switch. Appliance does not lace up correctly (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • No tape transport during picture search.
  • Tape loops form in initialisation on the left side.
  • The mechanism is blocked. The cassette tray is low and eject is impossible. Nothing moves when the loading motor is turned manually. The engaging rim is blocked and the pinch roller remains in the playback position. (picture attached)
  • Does not lace up at the beginning of the tape.
  • F1 on display. Tape is not fully loaded. Second roller remains at back.
  • The appliance laces up and unlaces, the display shows F4.
  • The cassette is pulled in but the tape does not lace up.
  • No drive function, only cassette is pulled into the compartment. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • The drive takes the cassette in and the tape laces up. But during unlacing the compartment does not come up again.
  • Cassette is accepted but no tape winding.
  • Tape creasing before recording (when 'back editing control' activates).
  • If powers up without a cassette, appliance usually moves the tray in and then out again. With this one the tray moves in and after a few seconds the machine switches off.
  • Appliance accepts the cassette, but the lacing up ring jerks on the back tension lever when lacing up.
  • After pushing eject button appliance immediately laces up again. Also during service mode A5. (picture attached)
  • The threading ring does not move the tape shifting lever to its initial position.
  • The picture sways and the sound flutters. The appliance eats the tape
  • Appliance does not unlace correctly, the pinion lever does not hook into the transport ring and the cassette compartment does not move up.
  • Cassette is accepted but tape is not laced up.
  • Magnetic tapes are damaged.
  • Appliance stops regularly when certain tapes are used.
  • Makes noise when lacing or with eject.
  • Appliance rattles when lacing up.
  • Loud noises in particular during REW.
  • The appliance does not initialise when the cassette sinks in. The display shows F6 but during service function A5 the appliance works.
  • Cassette loads then unloads.
  • Tape damage as it rides up or down the capstan.
  • Tape is laced up half way, F1 is displayed and solenoid rattles.
  • Random recognition of tape start or tape end. (20DV213 tips)
  • During unlacing tape lever remains pressed on and threading ring does not go to its initial position.
  • Drive revision.
  • Cassette lowers, but occasionally the appliance does not perform the initialisation sequence and then shows F 6.
  • Appliance does not accept cassette. When the mains plug is connected, there is no pulse to threading and capstan motor.
  • When lacing up displays F1, the tape is laced up then unlaced as if the drive was out of position. (20DV213 tips)
  • Mechanism stops and error message F2 appears on display. Intermittent fault.
  • Loads tape then ejects immediately.
  • When lacing up the tape lever shakes (left in drive). Take up motor means a smaller reel, supply motor means a larger reel.
  • Creasing tape. (service info for PHILIPS -20DV213)
  • Mechanical function fault.
  • After pulling in the cassette the appliance rewinds and does not take any more functions.
  • Cassette is not taken in, cassette compartment does not move in.
  • The recorder responds to tape-end even though the end of the tape has not been reached. (picture attached)
  • Appliance goes into playback, loads the tape and the pinch roller does not press against the capstan shaft.
  • In REV loops form on head drum or tape transport loosens.
  • Mechanical noise when inserting a new cassette and F1 is in the display.
  • The appliance does not take the cassette in and with a cassette inserted F1 is shown.
  • Machine accepts a cassette but doesn't thread up. The threading ring starts to move, then the threading motor stops.
  • Loads half way then ejects tape.
  • Tape is sliding.
  • Occasional lacing up of the tape - fault display F4.
  • Cassette is accepted and loads, but stops loading as soon as TU and supply spools are touching the cassette.
  • Tape loops occur if reeling process is interrupted.
  • Service "mechanism chassis".
  • Motors do not run. Tape is loaded
  • The cassette will not engage. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Does not accept cassette. When cassette is inserted all motors start up but compartment is not taken in.
  • Cassette remains stationary.
  • Appliance occasionally forms tape loops or unlaces.
  • Chassis stuck in PB position.
  • The tape laces up. When unlacing the tape blocks half way along.
  • Appliance stops after playing for a longer time, tape unlaces.
  • Does not load tape. (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • In eject cassette catches on cassette compartment flap.
  • Rewinds sporadically or switches off without an error message. (picture attached)
  • Threading mechanism jammed.
  • Tape transport motor slows down and stops after 30 secs.
  • The appliance does not load. The pinion lever does not fit in the tape path. The cassette housing does not lift up.
  • Tapes are cut in a longitudinal direction.
  • Cassette is ejected in PB, REW and other functions then goes into standby.
  • Cassette loads, then no function, no initialisation of reel motors, displays F7.
  • Intermittently after ejecting, a loop of tape remains stuck out of cassette.
  • Compartment is not lowered. (20DV213 tips)
  • The video head does not start up after the cassette is inserted. Cassette is ejected after 10 seconds.
  • Tape is not loaded and cassette is ejected immediately.
  • No supply voltages from the PSU.
  • Magnet switches but cassette is not accepted.
  • Mechanism stuck. Does not accept cassette.
  • Does not lace up or unlace. No function. (PHILIPS - 20DV213 information)
  • The lacing mechanism is blocked.
  • Tape reels not turning.
  • The cassette is not accepted and the compartment does not move in.
  • Brake solenoid switches, cassette compartment does not lower.
  • The appliance takes the cassette in and the take up reel motor runs jerkily. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • The appliance switches immediately to reverse when the cassette is lowered. No further function possible. The video head turns fast in service function A8. Capstan and reel motors turn.
  • The appliance does not take the cassette in. When pressing any function button during service function A5 the brake lifting solenoid switches to playback or stop and no further functions are taken. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Appliance is dead. Lacing ring is blocked when the appliance laces out.
  • Makes no initialisation, bounces only .
  • Mechanism jammed. (20DV213 PHILIPS repair tip)
  • When the cassette has sunk in, the appliance goes straight to rewind. No other functions.
  • The appliance takes the cassette in but does not perform initialisation and every 2nd.time F7 is shown. The tape forms loops.
  • The tape laces up but the appliance does not start up, the tape then does not unlace correctly. (service info for PHILIPS -20DV213)

  • If play or wind selected, cassette is ejected.
  • Poor loading.
  • The cassette sometimes stops in the middle or the appliance does not initialise when the cassette is lowered. (20DV213 PHILIPS repair tip)
  • Incorrect detection of the start or end of the tape. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Cassettes laces up too slowly.
  • Occasional tape damage and loading problems.
  • No REW picture search; tape gets chewed. (20DV213 tip from PHILIPS)
  • Loss of sound and/or mechanism damages tape after operating for a few secs.
  • When the cassette is inserted the tape loops then unloads.
