2SB56 / PHILIPS [Video recorder - VHS HiFi]
The EURAS repair tip database for professional technicians and service engineers
supplies the following faults for 2SB56 / PHILIPS.
List of fault symptoms:
- After running for a long time in EE mode the bands go off tune.
- Poor picture.
- The reel motors do not brake after the cassette is ejected or after switching on. (with circuit diagram extract)
- No test generator picture and no EE operation. (picture attached)
- No loading. Arms go back and forth then ejects.
- Timer REC with a SAT receiver.
- Poor eject then goes into safety.
- Ejects cassette after one second in PB.
- Service info: Modifications of the lacing motor and its holder.
- Head sticking (binding).
- Tape winds round capstan shaft when cassette has lowered. Display shows F1. In service function A5 the compartment goes down, capstan shaft turns immediately and transport ring turns slowly when lacing up. (with circuit diagram extract)

- Tapes tangle, sometimes eject and sometimes just switch off when PB.
- No time and date indication on the display. Tape time indication does not change during playback or forward and rewind. (picture attached) (PHILIPS - 2SB56 information)
- Playback does not work. The tape laces up but no tape transportation. After a while F3 appears in the display. (with circuit diagram extract)
- PAL chrominance REC current adjustment
- No power supply or LCD display on the front panel.
- Sound hums on prerecorded cassettes. During own recordings no sound. (with circuit diagram extract)
- No mechanism operation.

- The appliance accepts the cassette but does not correctly initialise and shows F7 in the display. The capstan motor does not turn. (PHILIPS - 2SB56 information)
- Bad recording, REC button does not function.

- Tape forms loops. When operating in service function A 5 the appliance laces up, but the video head and capstan do not turn. No further functions are taken. (with circuit diagram extract)
- No picture in viewfinder, mainly on UHF high channels.
- During playback of the recording there is only noise in the picture. Occ.an old recording can be seen in lower part of the picture. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- No sound in REC and EE mode. Picture fault in REC: picture is very instable horizontally (jumps rhythmically). No sound and intermittently no colour. Picture and sound OK with pre-recorded tapes.

- Loads tape then ejects immediately.
- Cassette is briefly accepted, laces up a little bit, then fast forwards briefly and cassette is ejected again.
- Appliance does not initialise correctly. Tape loops form on the pinch roller and the display shows F1 or F7.
- No PB. Eats tape.

- During playback the appliance switches back and forth between the AV picture and the HF modulator picture. During (extract of circuit diagram attached)

- Interference lines appear in the picture after 1 -1.5 hrs, appears like picture search. Sound oscillation can be heard in the background. (2SB56 PHILIPS repair tip)

- Cassette occasionally will not eject and remains in the compartment.
- Appliance lowers the cassette compartment, does not initialise and laces up immediately. Capstan motor does not run. Appliance unlaces and shows F1 in the display.

- Occasionally interference lines or disturbances across the whole picture and also no sound.

- FFWD faulty.
- Poor tape guide at pinch roller.
- Intermittently chews tapes.

- Occasionally no Y signal in PB then only colour present or wide white horizontal stripes appear in the picture. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- Starts up ok but noise coming from the power supply relay. Cassette is not loaded.
- Switches off REC and PB sometimes, unlaces and rewinds.
- No picture during playback. Depending on the appliance there is standard sound or Hi-Fi stereo sound. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- With some cassettes the appliance does not initialise.
- Cassette is ejected.
- Does not load tape.
- The brake lifting solenoid rattles during service function A5. (with circuit diagram extract)
- No fast rewind. Slow FF.
- New lacing motor for decks with production code WD43 and higher.
- No picture. in PB. No FF.
- In service function A5 the cassette is not taken. (with circuit diagram extract)
- Accepts cassette, laces up but head drum does not start. After a while F4 appears in display. In EE operation no station received. No test signal. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- In PB goes to fFF or REW by itself. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Defective driver, clatters, accepts no tape.
- PB level adjustment.

- Appliance takes the cassette in, laces up, but the video head does not come up to the correct speed.
- Tape is ejected. in REC.
- Lift does not stop by eject.
- The tape is cut at the lower edge of the tape on the guide flange (exploded diagram nr.147).

- Occasionally the old sound is not erased and the new sound is not recorded. (picture attached)
- Cassette deck doesn't come to HALFLOAD position when cassette is inserted.

- Cassette flap does not open. Cassette cannot be removed.

- The sound is distorted and the magnetic recording bias voltage is too low. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Mechanism blocks.
- Occasionally there are interference lines or disturbances across the whole picture with no sound.

- Does not start.Display does not flash.
- Erasing frequency adjustment.
- Tape sticks during forward and rewind and occasionally during PB according to the type of cassette.
- Occasionally, after cassette has been introduced, pre-loading does not occur. Cassette has to be ejected again. If PLAY button is pressed, appliance switches off. It can be restarted only after disconnecting mains.
- During playback and EE operation the Y-signal is missing but the colour is present. (with circuit diagram extract)

- Picture comes too late when you switch to playback (4-5sec). (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- Retracts cassette again after it has been ejected.

- No deck functions when cassette inserted.
- No EE- and playback picture. The test generator is bw/white/bw. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- HF-AGC adjustment PAL/SECAM
- When machine goes into record mode a pop is recorded on the audio track. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- Deck moves up/down and in/out.
- Display blinks, and/or a few segments light. (+ extract of circuit diagram) (2SB56 tips)
- Deck jammed.
- During playback of own recording the picture in the background is not correctly erased. Sound can be heard in the background.

- Occasionally the picture disappears or the picture shows vertical black and white lines. Sometimes the colour disappears.
- No picture during EE or record. In playback interference lines run through on the screen (no picture). (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- After playing for a long time the appliance does not unlace.
- No sound in AV REC. Everything ok via HF.
- Tape is not fully laced into the cassette when ejecting (tape loop with tape damage). Slow FFW and switches back to picture search
- All motors run, the display remains dark and no other functions possible. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- Fuse 401 in PSU blows continuously. (with circuit diagram extract)
- After switching on the capstan and reel motors run. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- After playing for a short time the picture is torn, occasionally the colour disappears or there are partly black lines or the picture is completely black.
- Changes in the customer instructions (see S.3-23).
- How to clean video head.
- Appliance lowers the cassette, initializes jerkily and sometimes forms tape loops. The tape is torn or not enough tension on the reel table. Appliance shows F7 or F8.

- Appliance malfunctions ie. plays when the play button is pushed, no eject, the display shows always 4 and goes only to forward and rewind.
- Appliance does not accept any functions. If the keys are pressed the display disappears. (part of circuit diagram displayed)

- Accepts tape, but no mechanical operation. Not eject.
- No tape length indication, the counter is ok.
- Appliance does not take the cassette in. When pressing any function button during service function A5 the brake lifting solenoid switches to playback or stop and no other function is taken. (picture attached)
- During HF-recording and HF-playback there is occasionally no sound.
- During playback of own recording the picture is not erased, the sound can be heard.
- Rattling in fast forward. (service info for PHILIPS -2SB56)
- Tape looping intermittently.
- Reduced back up time.
- Display continuously shows no cassette. (2SB56 tip from PHILIPS)
- No brake (supply spool) at end of REW or FFRWD.
- In CUE, REV and PB, ripple line jitter (slip-stick of vertical and horizontal lines).
- Timing of the Show View REC.

- No eject. Does not accept cassette when manually wound; PB and REC OK.
- Reel brakes not operating. (2SB56 tip from PHILIPS)
- SECAM Bd.1-AFC-tuning adjustment.
- During EE operation no stations are received and no test picture but during playback the picture is present. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- The cassette compartment lowers and the appliance laces up and the capstan motor does not turn. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Locks up during REW.
- Brake does not function when winding. Tape loops at beginning after REW.
- Output voltage +5V adjustment.
- Picture is distorted (lines run from left to right, the picture is torn).
- During record the playback picture can be seen, no EE picture and no test generator. (with circuit diagram extract)
- The cassette is not pulled in straight
- Software adjustment of gap positions.
- Defective components after defective PSU.
- Bias current adjustment.
- Counter runs the wrong way.
- No FF. No REW.
- The picture jumps from left to right (picture attached)
- VCR 1 - VCR 2. Adjustment of VCR; adjustment of RC. The adjustment must be performed if the VCR works via front keys and it displays VCR 1 (or 2) via RC.

- No loading or unloading. Stuck half way.
- The test generator picture is the wrong way round and distorted, no EE picture. During playback there is sound but no picture. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- Sound drones and picture has interference lines.
- When the appliance is set to playback it laces up, but the video head does not turn. Appliance unlaces and shows F 4 on the display. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- The appliance does not initialise when the cassette has lowered. The display shows F6 but during service function A5 the appliance can be operated.
- PSU whistles. after start-up. No display. (with circuit diagram extract)
- PAL/SECAM-AFC tuning.
- The cassette is lowered, appliance does not initialise and no further function is possible. Appliance laces up during service function A5.The capstan motor does not run but the video head does. (part of circuit diagram displayed) (service info for PHILIPS -2SB56)
- Pulley shaft + worm shaft (pos. 47 + 48).
- EE picture occasionally has no content also no test picture generator. Occasionally the picture is not present, only white disturbance lines (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- No OSD.
- No sound during playback, sound is muted. During EE operation it is not possible to receive a station. Test signal is missing. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- Slow lace up. No eject.
- SECAM chrominance REC current adjustment.
- No function after inserting a cassette. "No cassette" in the display. Lacing motor does not start up.

- No audio.
- During own recording and occasionally during playback there are lines in the picture after playing for a certain time. The picture jitters vertically and the sound goes out of tune.
- Timer frequency adjustment.

- Does not load tape. intermittently.
- HF-AGC adjustment PAL.
- Appliance switches to playback. No picture recording, only noise in the picture. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- Dark display.
- Does not lace up correctly. PB only after pushing play button twice. Tape loops. Cassette is not always accepted
- Tape spillage at times.
- Power supply no function.
- After a time the sound is intermittent, therefore it is either loud or quiet or the level varies.
- After inserting the cassette, display shows "LOCKED".
- Slow or no loading
- Cassette is accepted but the appliance does not initialise. In service functio A5 the tape laces up and both capstan motor and video head turn.
- Cassette is ejected and is immediately retracted. This way it gets stuck once in a while. PSU must be pulled in for turning off.
- Distorted audio and tracking lines.
- OK for short time from standby or when tape inserted; then immediately ejects tape and goes back to standby.
- During playback of prerecorded cassette occasionally the colour goes totally and the picture folds over in the top third. (2SB56 tip from PHILIPS)

- F1 flashes in the display and will not take in a cassette. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- Tape stuck inside when switching from REW or FF to eject.
- After playing for one hour, switches by itself from PB to REW.
- No REC function from standby position.
- The appliance runs in the service function A 5 without a cassette. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Half lace arm does not return to correct position.
- During own recording there is interference in the picture but playback is ok.
- Squeaks when lacing up or during unlacing. Does not eject and the lacing belt slips through.
- No picture in viewfinder in PB and test picture generator mode.
- Display dark, motors turn but no function.
- The Burndy plug is intermittent.
- No REW. Goes into CUE instead of FF.
- Switches between SP and LP at playback. Time-indicator changes.
- No colour. in E-E.
- After changing the ERASE/REC/PB head, REV picture search does not function.
- Worm gear repairing set installation. (PHILIPS - 2SB56 information)
- During recording the sound is distorted or hums. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- In record mode, set switches accidentally to E1; display gets confused.
- Drive does not work correctly and is noisy.
- Capstan runs in intervals either too fast to stops.
- The appliance does not lower the cassette. In service function A5 the cassette is accepted, laced up and appliance goes to playback. (picture attached)
- No picture. in E-E. Audio OK . (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- The brass tape lever next to the pinch roller twitches during play, the take- up reel runs jerkily.
- Tracking ok in normal play. After REV defective tracking at tape exit. FM carrier shows pinch effect. Picture ok in CUE.
- During playback the FM carrier are missing. The picture appears black and white or shows sometimes black and white lines. Occasionally the sound is present.
- Creases tapes. Noise bands on screen. Displays "TRACK".
- Interference zones repeat periodically in the picture and the sound is intermittent. (with circuit diagram extract)
- Appliance does not accept the cassette (not even in service function A5) (2SB56 tips)
- No longer possible to operate appliance or data line is blocked.

- Occasionally chassis does not carry out functions.
- Cassette is not retracted. Display lights up. No function.
- Reduced backup time (> WD10).
- The cassette compartment does not lower and the compartment guide is bent.
- Defective operation during backward search.
- Rattle during lace-up.
- Sound is muted in the search or ATTS modes. (picture attached)
- Lift does not come low enough, cassette is rejected.
- PB picture shows disturbances, appears like a tracking fault. (picture attached)
- The first few minutes after receiving power appliance does not accept any commands. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Does not accept tape.
- Poor tracking.

- Chassis does not reach half loading position after accepting tape.
- Wavy verticals in playback and/or FF/REW picture search.
- PAL-AFC-tuning.
- The right reel table does not run, appliance forms tape loops and shows F6 on the display.

- Squeaking from the appliance and waves in the picture after some time.

- Occasionally the appliance does not go to forward, playback or other tape drive functions. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- Lound noise from mechanism. When ejecting tape, lift loads again and ejects by itself several times. (PHILIPS - 2SB56 information)
- When unlacing the tape lever remains pressed on and the threading ring does not go to its starting position.

- Back tension arm does not return to correct position when unloading.
- To switch modulator on or off.
- Video heads get dirty each time the cassette is ejected.
- FF and REW do not function correctly or not at all.
- Cassette is accepted and then ejected with tape loops. REW appears on display.
- The cassette compartment lowers and appliance loads the tape. Capstan motor does not start up. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- When trying to eject the cassette, it jams on the upper part of the operating panel.
- Playback picture folds over at the upper edge. Head servo is too slow during picture search.
- Poor picture, set blocks.
- Erratic picture. Poor tracking. Coloured spots.
- No picture. in PB. Audio OK .
- Intermittent FF and REW. Tape loops on EJECT.
