2SB5608 / PHILIPS [Video recorder - VHS HiFi]

supplies the following faults for 2SB5608 / PHILIPS.
List of fault symptoms:
- No sound during playback, sound is muted. During EE operation it is not possible to receive a station. Test signal is missing. (picture attached) (2SB5608 tip from PHILIPS)

- The brake lifting solenoid rattles during service function A5. (picture attached)
- Does not accept tape.
- Tape is ejected. in REC.
- HF-AGC adjustment PAL.
- Changes in the customer instructions (see S.3-23).
- Timing of the Show View REC.
- The reel motors do not brake after the cassette is ejected or after switching on. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Capstan runs in intervals either too fast to stops.
- Distorted audio and tracking lines.
- Tape looping intermittently. (PHILIPS - 2SB5608 information)
- No longer possible to operate appliance or data line is blocked.
- Occasionally chassis does not carry out functions.
- Occasionally the picture disappears or the picture shows vertical black and white lines. Sometimes the colour disappears.
- Poor tape guide at pinch roller.
- The appliance does not lower the cassette. In service function A5 the cassette is accepted, laced up and appliance goes to playback. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- Reduced back up time.
- Disturbance bands run through during picture search function. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- New lacing motor for decks with production code WD43 and higher.
- After playing for one hour, switches by itself from PB to REW.
- Picture is distorted (lines run from left to right, the picture is torn).
- Switches between SP and LP at playback. Time-indicator changes.
- Occasionally there are interference lines or disturbances across the whole picture with no sound.
- No test generator picture and no EE operation. (picture attached)
- Pulley shaft + worm shaft (pos. 47 + 48).
- During record the playback picture can be seen, no EE picture and no test generator. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- Sound drones and picture has interference lines.
- Reduced backup time (> WD10).
- Locks up during REW.
- During playback of prerecorded cassette occasionally the colour goes totally and the picture folds over in the top third. (2SB5608 PHILIPS repair tip)
- Starts up ok but noise coming from the power supply relay. Cassette is not loaded.
- During recording the sound is distorted or hums. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Tape sticks during forward and rewind and occasionally during PB according to the type of cassette.
- Slow lace up. No eject.
- The appliance accepts the cassette but does not correctly initialise and shows F7 in the display. The capstan motor does not turn. (service info for PHILIPS -2SB5608)

- During playback and EE operation the Y-signal is missing but the colour is present. (with circuit diagram extract)

- No function after inserting a cassette. "No cassette" in the display. Lacing motor does not start up.
- The brass tape lever next to the pinch roller twitches during play, the take- up reel runs jerkily.
- Occasionally the appliance does not go to forward, playback or other tape drive functions. (with circuit diagram extract)
- Volume varies. in REC.
- Display blinks, and/or a few segments light. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- During EE operation no stations are received and no test picture but during playback the picture is present. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- Deck jammed.
- After playing for a short time the picture is torn, occasionally the colour disappears or there are partly black lines or the picture is completely black.
- Ejects cassette after one second in PB. (2SB5608 PHILIPS repair tip)
- Counter runs the wrong way.

- No mechanism operation.
- The sound is distorted and the magnetic recording bias voltage is too low. (part of circuit diagram displayed)

- During playback the appliance switches back and forth between the AV picture and the HF modulator picture. During (+ extract of circuit diagram)

- Tape is not fully laced into the cassette when ejecting (tape loop with tape damage). Slow FFW and switches back to picture search
- Fuse 401 in PSU blows continuously. (with circuit diagram extract)
- No colour. in E-E.
- Cassette is briefly accepted, laces up a little bit, then fast forwards briefly and cassette is ejected again.
- Cassette occasionally will not eject and remains in the compartment.
- No picture. in E-E. Audio OK . (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Playback does not work. The tape laces up but no tape transportation. After a while F3 appears in the display. (picture attached)
- No eject.
- Bias current adjustment.
- VCR 1 - VCR 2. Adjustment of VCR; adjustment of RC. The adjustment must be performed if the VCR works via front keys and it displays VCR 1 (or 2) via RC.
- Appliance takes the cassette in, laces up, but the video head does not come up to the correct speed.
- Lift does not stop by eject.
- Signal electronic IC LA7437 (Pos. 7051) part no. info: Corrections in the customer service instructions.
- The cassette is not pulled in straight (service info for PHILIPS -2SB5608)
- Dark display.
- Tape winds round capstan shaft when cassette has lowered. Display shows F1. In service function A5 the compartment goes down, capstan shaft turns immediately and transport ring turns slowly when lacing up. (picture attached)
- Interference lines appear in the picture after 1 -1.5 hrs, appears like picture search. Sound oscillation can be heard in the background.
- No eject. Does not accept cassette when manually wound; PB and REC OK. (2SB5608 tip from PHILIPS)
- No picture in viewfinder, mainly on UHF high channels.
- The cassette is lowered, appliance does not initialise and no further function is possible. Appliance laces up during service function A5.The capstan motor does not run but the video head does. (picture attached)

- Lift does not come low enough, cassette is rejected.
- No functions. (picture attached)
- In CUE, REV and PB, ripple line jitter (slip-stick of vertical and horizontal lines).
- After a time the sound is intermittent, therefore it is either loud or quiet or the level varies.

- FFWD faulty.
- Cassette is accepted but the appliance does not initialise. In service functio A5 the tape laces up and both capstan motor and video head turn.
- Rattling in fast forward.
- Bad recording, REC button does not function.
- Sound is muted in the search or ATTS modes. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Squeaking from the appliance and waves in the picture after some time.
- SECAM chrominance REC current adjustment.
- Picture is badly distorted, bars are visible. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- Head sticking (binding).
- Appliance malfunctions ie. plays when the play button is pushed, no eject, the display shows always 4 and goes only to forward and rewind.
- Deck moves up/down and in/out.
- PAL-AFC-tuning.
- During playback of the recording there is only noise in the picture. Occ.an old recording can be seen in lower part of the picture. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
- Cassette compartment does not lower with the cassette inserted. (+ extract of circuit diagram)

- Sound hums on prerecorded cassettes. During own recordings no sound. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
- No picture. in PB. Audio OK .
- Chassis does not reach half loading position after accepting tape.
- Occasionally, after cassette has been introduced, pre-loading does not occur. Cassette has to be ejected again. If PLAY button is pressed, appliance switches off. It can be restarted only after disconnecting mains.
- No sound in REC and EE mode. Picture fault in REC: picture is very instable horizontally (jumps rhythmically). No sound and intermittently no colour. Picture and sound OK with pre-recorded tapes.
- Intermittent FF and REW. Tape loops on EJECT.
- Poor picture.
- Brake does not function when winding. Tape loops at beginning after REW.
- Cassette is accepted and then ejected with tape loops. REW appears on display.

- Appliance lowers the cassette, initializes jerkily and sometimes forms tape loops. The tape is torn or not enough tension on the reel table. Appliance shows F7 or F8.
- No audio (via SCART). (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- No brake (supply spool) at end of REW or FFRWD.

- Playback picture folds over at the upper edge. Head servo is too slow during picture search.
- No test generator, no EE picture and no initialisation. +12V protective switching has responded. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
- During HF-recording and HF-playback there is occasionally no sound.
- No picture. in PB. No FF.
- Reel brakes not operating.

- When unlacing the tape lever remains pressed on and the threading ring does not go to its starting position.

- Does not load tape.
- Does not load tape. intermittently.
- Erasing frequency adjustment.

- During playback the FM carrier are missing. The picture appears black and white or shows sometimes black and white lines. Occasionally the sound is present.
- Tape stuck inside when switching from REW or FF to eject.

- No tape length indication, the counter is ok.

- Cassette deck doesn't come to HALFLOAD position when cassette is inserted.

- The reel tacho pulses are too small.
- No REC function from standby position.
- PAL/SECAM-AFC tuning.
- The Burndy plug is intermittent.

- No loading. Arms go back and forth then ejects. (2SB5608 tips)

- Power supply no function.
- Loads tape then ejects immediately.

- No REW. Goes into CUE instead of FF.

- After running for a long time in EE mode the bands go off tune.
- Occasionally the colon between the hours and minutes in the time do not flash (with circuit diagram extract)
- Tape spillage at times.

- Half lace arm does not return to correct position.
- Lound noise from mechanism. When ejecting tape, lift loads again and ejects by itself several times.
- During own recording there is interference in the picture but playback is ok.
- Output voltage +5V adjustment.

- OK for short time from standby or when tape inserted; then immediately ejects tape and goes back to standby.
- How to clean video head.
- FF and REW do not function correctly or not at all.
- With some cassettes the appliance does not initialise.
- No power supply or LCD display on the front panel.
- No loading or unloading. Stuck half way.

- In record mode, set switches accidentally to E1; display gets confused.
- Drive does not work correctly and is noisy.

- After playing for a long time the appliance does not unlace.
- Does not lace up correctly. PB only after pushing play button twice. Tape loops. Cassette is not always accepted

- After changing the ERASE/REC/PB head, REV picture search does not function.
- PAL chrominance REC current adjustment
- The appliance does not initialise when the cassette has lowered. The display shows F6 but during service function A5 the appliance can be operated.

- Does not start.Display does not flash.

- Cassette is ejected and is immediately retracted. This way it gets stuck once in a while. PSU must be pulled in for turning off.
- No picture in viewfinder in PB and test picture generator mode.
- During own recording and occasionally during playback there are lines in the picture after playing for a certain time. The picture jitters vertically and the sound goes out of tune.
- Rattle during lace-up.
- When the appliance is set to playback it laces up, but the video head does not turn. Appliance unlaces and shows F 4 on the display. (picture attached)
- Timer frequency adjustment.
- The right reel table does not run, appliance forms tape loops and shows F6 on the display.
- Display dark, motors turn but no function.

- Defective driver, clatters, accepts no tape.
- The picture jumps from left to right (with circuit diagram extract)
- To switch modulator on or off.
- No fast rewind. Slow FF.
- After inserting the cassette, display shows "LOCKED".

- Sync level frequency adjustment.
- Creases tapes. Noise bands on screen. Displays "TRACK".
