2SB5638 / PHILIPS [Video recorder - VHS HiFi]

  • The right reel table does not run, appliance forms tape loops and shows F6 on the display.

  • Poor tape guide at pinch roller.
  • After playing for a long time the appliance does not unlace.
  • Switches off REC and PB sometimes, unlaces and rewinds.

  • FFWD faulty.
  • Pulley shaft + worm shaft (pos. 47 + 48).
  • Switches between SP and LP at playback. Time-indicator changes.
  • Appliance lowers the cassette compartment, does not initialise and laces up immediately. Capstan motor does not run. Appliance unlaces and shows F1 in the display.
  • PAL-AFC-tuning.
  • No FF. No REW.
  • Timing of the Show View REC.
  • Part no. info.: IC7051 (LA7437)
  • Power supply no function.
  • No time and date indication on the display. Tape time indication does not change during playback or forward and rewind. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Erratic picture. Poor tracking. Coloured spots.

  • Does not load tape. intermittently.

  • Wavy verticals in playback and/or FF/REW picture search.
  • Bias current adjustment.

  • After running for a long time in EE mode the bands go off tune.

  • Does not accept tape.
  • No deck functions when cassette inserted.
  • How to clean video head.
  • Appliance malfunctions ie. plays when the play button is pushed, no eject, the display shows always 4 and goes only to forward and rewind.
  • Appliance does not take the cassette in. When pressing any function button during service function A5 the brake lifting solenoid switches to playback or stop and no other function is taken. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • OK for short time from standby or when tape inserted; then immediately ejects tape and goes back to standby.

  • No picture. in PB. No FF. (2SB5638 tips)
  • No picture during playback. Depending on the appliance there is standard sound or Hi-Fi stereo sound. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Poor picture.
  • Rattle during lace-up.
  • Occasionally, after cassette has been introduced, pre-loading does not occur. Cassette has to be ejected again. If PLAY button is pressed, appliance switches off. It can be restarted only after disconnecting mains.

  • New lacing motor for decks with production code WD43 and higher.
  • SECAM Bd.1-AFC-tuning adjustment.
  • To switch modulator on or off.
  • The picture jumps from left to right (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • During playback of own recording the picture in the background is not correctly erased. Sound can be heard in the background.
  • Cassette flap does not open. Cassette cannot be removed.
  • Appliance takes the cassette in, laces up, but the video head does not come up to the correct speed.
  • The reel tacho pulses are too small.
  • Chassis does not respond to anything. Display OK.
  • Locks up during REW.
  • Cassette deck doesn't come to HALFLOAD position when cassette is inserted. (2SB5638 tips)
  • After inserting the cassette, display shows "LOCKED".

  • Appliance does not accept the cassette (not even in service function A5)
  • Appliance does not accept any functions. If the keys are pressed the display disappears. (picture attached)
  • Occasionally no Y signal in PB then only colour present or wide white horizontal stripes appear in the picture. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • In PB goes to fFF or REW by itself. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Slow lace up. No eject.
  • No picture in viewfinder, mainly on UHF high channels.
  • No eject. Does not accept cassette when manually wound; PB and REC OK.

  • EE picture occasionally has no content also no test picture generator. Occasionally the picture is not present, only white disturbance lines (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Intermittently chews tapes.
  • Cassette is accepted but the appliance does not initialise. In service functio A5 the tape laces up and both capstan motor and video head turn.
  • No tuning. Black screen.
  • Tape is not fully laced into the cassette when ejecting (tape loop with tape damage). Slow FFW and switches back to picture search
  • Interference lines appear in the picture after 1 -1.5 hrs, appears like picture search. Sound oscillation can be heard in the background.
  • Tracking ok in normal play. After REV defective tracking at tape exit. FM carrier shows pinch effect. Picture ok in CUE.

  • Does not start.Display does not flash.

  • Video heads get dirty each time the cassette is ejected.
  • In CUE, REV and PB, ripple line jitter (slip-stick of vertical and horizontal lines).
  • Accepts tape, but no mechanical operation. Not eject.
  • The cassette is not pulled in straight

  • No tape length indication, the counter is ok.

  • Back tension arm does not return to correct position when unloading.
  • Loads tape then ejects immediately.

  • During playback of prerecorded cassette occasionally the colour goes totally and the picture folds over in the top third.

  • The appliance accepts the cassette but does not correctly initialise and shows F7 in the display. The capstan motor does not turn.
  • Output voltage +5V adjustment.
  • Occasionally chassis does not carry out functions.

  • Starts up ok but noise coming from the power supply relay. Cassette is not loaded.
  • Picture is distorted (lines run from left to right, the picture is torn).

  • Intermittent FF and REW. Tape loops on EJECT.

  • Timer REC with a SAT receiver.
  • No picture. in PB. Audio OK .
  • Bad recording, REC button does not function.
  • The appliance does not initialise when the cassette has lowered. The display shows F6 but during service function A5 the appliance can be operated.
  • Does not load tape.
  • No mechanism operation.

  • Deck jammed.
  • Tape forms loops. When operating in service function A 5 the appliance laces up, but the video head and capstan do not turn. No further functions are taken. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Chassis does not reach half loading position after accepting tape.
  • During own recording there is interference in the picture but playback is ok.
  • VCR 1 - VCR 2. Adjustment of VCR; adjustment of RC. The adjustment must be performed if the VCR works via front keys and it displays VCR 1 (or 2) via RC.
  • Appliance does not take any function, the display does not light but all voltages are present. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • No REW. Goes into CUE instead of FF.

  • During playback of own recording the picture is not erased, the sound can be heard.
  • During playback the FM carrier are missing. The picture appears black and white or shows sometimes black and white lines. Occasionally the sound is present.
  • No colour in PB. (picture attached)

  • Occasionally there are interference lines or disturbances across the whole picture with no sound.
  • Lift does not come low enough, cassette is rejected.

  • No fast rewind. Slow FF.
  • Defective operation during backward search.
  • Appliance switches to playback. No picture recording, only noise in the picture. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • When the appliance is set to playback it laces up, but the video head does not turn. Appliance unlaces and shows F 4 on the display. (picture attached)
  • Drive does not work correctly and is noisy.
  • During EE operation no stations are received and no test picture but during playback the picture is present. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Rattling in fast forward.
  • Occasionally the colon between the hours and minutes in the time do not flash (picture attached)
  • Ejects cassette after one second in PB. (service info for PHILIPS -2SB5638)

  • In record mode, set switches accidentally to E1; display gets confused.
  • Half lace arm does not return to correct position.
  • Occasionally the old sound is not erased and the new sound is not recorded. (picture attached)
  • Erasing frequency adjustment.
  • Tape is ejected. in REC.
  • Poor eject then goes into safety.
  • Sound is muted in the search or ATTS modes. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • No function after inserting a cassette. "No cassette" in the display. Lacing motor does not start up.
  • Tape winds round capstan shaft when cassette has lowered. Display shows F1. In service function A5 the compartment goes down, capstan shaft turns immediately and transport ring turns slowly when lacing up. (picture attached)
  • When trying to eject the cassette, it jams on the upper part of the operating panel.
  • Brake does not function when winding. Tape loops at beginning after REW.
  • PB picture shows disturbances, appears like a tracking fault. (picture attached)
  • Lift does not stop by eject.
  • PAL chrominance REC current adjustment (2SB5638 PHILIPS repair tip)
  • Sound drones and picture has interference lines.
  • Occasionally the appliance does not go to forward, playback or other tape drive functions. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Slow or no loading

  • During playback the appliance switches back and forth between AV picture and the HF modulator picture. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Cassette occasionally will not eject and remains in the compartment. (PHILIPS - 2SB5638 information)
  • The brass tape lever next to the pinch roller twitches during play, the take- up reel runs jerkily.
  • SECAM chrominance REC current adjustment.
  • Distorted audio and tracking lines.

  • Retracts cassette again after it has been ejected.

  • FF and REW do not function correctly or not at all.
  • Vertical ripple line jitter.
  • No sound in REC and EE mode. Picture fault in REC: picture is very instable horizontally (jumps rhythmically). No sound and intermittently no colour. Picture and sound OK with pre-recorded tapes.
  • Sound hums on prerecorded cassettes. During own recordings no sound. (picture attached)
  • The sound is distorted and the magnetic recording bias voltage is too low. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Tape looping intermittently. (2SB5638 tips)
  • The tape is cut at the lower edge of the tape on the guide flange (exploded diagram nr.147).
  • Appliance does not initialise correctly. Tape loops form on the pinch roller and the display shows F1 or F7.
  • Does not lace up correctly. PB only after pushing play button twice. Tape loops. Cassette is not always accepted

  • Deck moves up/down and in/out.

  • Software adjustment of gap positions.
  • No picture in viewfinder in PB and test picture generator mode.

  • No test generator, no EE picture and no initialisation. +12V protective switching has responded. (picture attached)
  • No sound during playback, sound is muted. During EE operation it is not possible to receive a station. Test signal is missing. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • PB level adjustment.
  • Head sticking (binding).
  • Cassette is ejected and is immediately retracted. This way it gets stuck once in a while. PSU must be pulled in for turning off.
  • After changing the ERASE/REC/PB head, REV picture search does not function.

  • After playing for one hour, switches by itself from PB to REW.

  • After playing for a short time the picture is torn, occasionally the colour disappears or there are partly black lines or the picture is completely black.
  • No sound in AV REC. Everything ok via HF.
  • The cassette is lowered, appliance does not initialise and no further function is possible. Appliance laces up during service function A5.The capstan motor does not run but the video head does. (picture attached)
