2SB57 / PHILIPS [Video recorder - VHS HiFi]

List of fault symptoms:
  • Occasionally the picture disappears or the picture shows vertical black and white lines. Sometimes the colour disappears.
  • Does not accept tape.
  • Distorted audio and tracking lines.
  • Does not lace up correctly. PB only after pushing play button twice. Tape loops. Cassette is not always accepted

  • Cassette is ejected.
  • When trying to eject the cassette, it jams on the upper part of the operating panel.
  • Disturbance bands run through during picture search function. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Wavy verticals in playback and/or FF/REW picture search.

  • Mechanism blocks.
  • Accepts cassette, laces up but head drum does not start. After a while F4 appears in display. In EE operation no station received. No test signal. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • EE picture is distorted. During playback the lines fold over. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Reduced backup time (> WD10).
  • No loading. Arms go back and forth then ejects.

  • Signal electronic IC LA7437 (Pos. 7051) part no. info: Corrections in the customer service instructions.
  • Cassette flap does not open. Cassette cannot be removed. (PHILIPS - 2SB57 information)
  • VCR 1 - VCR 2. Adjustment of VCR; adjustment of RC. The adjustment must be performed if the VCR works via front keys and it displays VCR 1 (or 2) via RC.
  • No audio. via AV. No picture. via AV. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Capstan runs in intervals either too fast to stops.
  • Tape looping intermittently.
  • No PB. Eats tape.
  • FF and REW do not function correctly or not at all.
  • Loads tape then ejects immediately.
  • Cassette compartment does not lower with the cassette inserted. (part of circuit diagram displayed)

  • No brake (supply spool) at end of REW or FFRWD.
  • Ejects cassette after one second in PB.
  • Tape is not fully laced into the cassette when ejecting (tape loop with tape damage). Slow FFW and switches back to picture search

  • Cassette is accepted but the appliance does not initialise. In service functio A5 the tape laces up and both capstan motor and video head turn.
  • When unlacing the tape lever remains pressed on and the threading ring does not go to its starting position.
  • Lines in the picture, sometimes at the top, sometimes in the middle. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • The appliance runs in the service function A 5 without a cassette. (+ extract of circuit diagram)

  • Occasionally the old sound is not erased and the new sound is not recorded. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • PB level adjustment.
  • In PB goes to fFF or REW by itself. (picture attached)
  • Tape winds round capstan shaft when cassette has lowered. Display shows F1. In service function A5 the compartment goes down, capstan shaft turns immediately and transport ring turns slowly when lacing up. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • During playback the FM carrier are missing. The picture appears black and white or shows sometimes black and white lines. Occasionally the sound is present.
  • No mechanism operation.
  • Accepts tape, but no mechanical operation. Not eject. (service info for PHILIPS -2SB57)
  • Timing of the Show View REC.

  • Sound hums on prerecorded cassettes. During own recordings no sound. (picture attached)
  • Display dark, motors turn but no function.

  • SECAM Bd.1-AFC-tuning adjustment.

  • PAL/SECAM-AFC tuning.
  • Tape is ejected. in REC.
  • No tuning. Black screen. (PHILIPS - 2SB57 information)
  • Appliance takes the cassette in and the reel motor runs jerkily. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Tracking ok in normal play. After REV defective tracking at tape exit. FM carrier shows pinch effect. Picture ok in CUE. (2SB57 tip from PHILIPS)
  • No picture. in PB. No FF.
  • Pulley shaft + worm shaft (pos. 47 + 48).
  • Rattling in fast forward. (2SB57 tips)
  • Intermittently chews tapes.
  • Erasing frequency adjustment.
  • During playback of prerecorded cassette occasionally the colour goes totally and the picture folds over in the top third.
  • During own recording there is interference in the picture but playback is ok.
  • During playback of own recording the picture is not erased, the sound can be heard.

  • HF-AGC adjustment PAL/SECAM

  • EE picture occasionally has no content also no test picture generator. Occasionally the picture is not present, only white disturbance lines (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • All motors run, the display remains dark and no other functions possible. (+ extract of circuit diagram)

  • PAL-AFC-tuning.
  • During EE operation no stations are received and no test picture but during playback the picture is present. (picture attached) (2SB57 tips)
  • No EE- and playback picture. The test generator is bw/white/bw. (picture attached)
  • Defective operation during backward search.
  • Poor picture.
  • The test generator picture is the wrong way round and distorted, no EE picture. During playback there is sound but no picture. (extract of circuit diagram attached)

  • Erratic picture. Poor tracking. Coloured spots.
  • No time and date indication on the display. Tape time indication does not change during playback or forward and rewind. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • HF-AGC adjustment PAL.

  • Poor tape guide at pinch roller.
  • Appliance lowers the cassette compartment, does not initialise and laces up immediately. Capstan motor does not run. Appliance unlaces and shows F1 in the display.
  • The appliance accepts the cassette but does not correctly initialise and shows F7 in the display. The capstan motor does not turn.
  • No RC functions. (picture attached)
  • After playing for a long time the appliance does not unlace.
  • Playback does not work. The tape laces up but no tape transportation. After a while F3 appears in the display. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • After a time the sound is intermittent, therefore it is either loud or quiet or the level varies.
  • Cassette is ejected and is immediately retracted. This way it gets stuck once in a while. PSU must be pulled in for turning off.
  • The reel tacho pulses are too small.
  • Head sticking (binding).
  • SECAM chrominance REC current adjustment. (PHILIPS - 2SB57 information)
  • With some cassettes the appliance does not initialise.
  • Does not start.Display does not flash.
  • No test generator picture and no EE operation. (picture attached)

  • Service info: Modifications of the lacing motor and its holder.
  • Intermittent FF and REW. Tape loops on EJECT.
  • Tape forms loops. When operating in service function A 5 the appliance laces up, but the video head and capstan do not turn. No further functions are taken. (picture attached)
  • No loading or unloading. Stuck half way.
  • No REW. Goes into CUE instead of FF.

  • Lound noise from mechanism. When ejecting tape, lift loads again and ejects by itself several times.
  • Appliance does not accept HF recording. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • During playback the appliance switches back and forth between the AV picture and the HF modulator picture. During (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Tape sticks during forward and rewind and occasionally during PB according to the type of cassette.

  • The first few minutes after receiving power appliance does not accept any commands. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Switches off REC and PB sometimes, unlaces and rewinds. (PHILIPS - 2SB57 information)
  • Appliance does not take the cassette in. When pressing any function button during service function A5 the brake lifting solenoid switches to playback or stop and no other function is taken. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Timer frequency adjustment.
  • Deck jammed.
  • The cassette is lowered, appliance does not initialise and no further function is possible. Appliance laces up during service function A5.The capstan motor does not run but the video head does. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • After changing the ERASE/REC/PB head, REV picture search does not function.
  • Poor picture, set blocks.

  • Interference zones repeat periodically in the picture and the sound is intermittent. (picture attached)
  • Poor eject then goes into safety.
  • No power supply or LCD display on the front panel.
  • No sound in REC and EE mode. Picture fault in REC: picture is very instable horizontally (jumps rhythmically). No sound and intermittently no colour. Picture and sound OK with pre-recorded tapes.
  • Defective driver, clatters, accepts no tape.
  • New lacing motor for decks with production code WD43 and higher.
  • No picture during EE or record. In playback interference lines run through on the screen (no picture). (picture attached)
  • Appliance does not initialise correctly. Tape loops form on the pinch roller and the display shows F1 or F7.
  • Creases tapes. Noise bands on screen. Displays "TRACK".

  • The brake lifting solenoid rattles during service function A5. (picture attached)
  • No colour. in E-E.
  • Reduced back up time.
  • Squeaking from the appliance and waves in the picture after some time.
  • The cassette is not pulled in straight
  • Picture is badly distorted, bars are visible. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Sync level frequency adjustment.
  • During playback the appliance switches back and forth between AV picture and the HF modulator picture. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • FFWD faulty.
  • Rattle during lace-up.
  • Cassette is briefly accepted, laces up a little bit, then fast forwards briefly and cassette is ejected again.
  • Vertical ripple line jitter.
  • Volume varies. in REC.
  • In record mode, set switches accidentally to E1; display gets confused.
  • No longer possible to operate appliance or data line is blocked.
  • Occasionally chassis does not carry out functions.
  • The right reel table does not run, appliance forms tape loops and shows F6 on the display.

  • No fast rewind. Slow FF.
  • Cassette is not retracted. Display lights up. No function.
  • Starts up ok but noise coming from the power supply relay. Cassette is not loaded.
  • The Burndy plug is intermittent.
  • To switch modulator on or off.

  • Software adjustment of gap positions.
  • Tapes tangle, sometimes eject and sometimes just switch off when PB.
  • Occasionally interference lines or disturbances across the whole picture and also no sound.
  • Switches between SP and LP at playback. Time-indicator changes.
  • After inserting the cassette, display shows "LOCKED".

  • No sound after recording, sound from previous recording is not erased.

  • No eject.
  • No REC function from standby position.
  • Poor tracking.
  • Picture is distorted (lines run from left to right, the picture is torn).
  • PSU whistles. after start-up. No display. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • During record the playback picture can be seen, no EE picture and no test generator. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • The reel motors do not brake after the cassette is ejected or after switching on. (picture attached)
  • No deck functions when cassette inserted.
  • Squeaks when lacing up or during unlacing. Does not eject and the lacing belt slips through.
  • No sound in AV REC. Everything ok via HF.
  • During playback of own recording the picture in the background is not correctly erased. Sound can be heard in the background.
  • The sound is distorted and the magnetic recording bias voltage is too low. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Playback picture folds over at the upper edge. Head servo is too slow during picture search.
  • Cassette deck doesn't come to HALFLOAD position when cassette is inserted.
  • Appliance does not take any function, the display does not light but all voltages are present. (extract of circuit diagram attached)

  • Bias current adjustment.
  • Interference lines appear in the picture after 1 -1.5 hrs, appears like picture search. Sound oscillation can be heard in the background.
  • The top segments in the display light continuously. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Chassis does not respond to anything. Display OK.
  • After playing for one hour, switches by itself from PB to REW.
  • Does not load tape.
  • Tape stuck inside when switching from REW or FF to eject.
  • No OSD.
  • No picture in viewfinder, mainly on UHF high channels.
  • Lift does not stop by eject.
  • Power supply no function.
  • No picture in viewfinder in PB and test picture generator mode.
  • No sound during playback, sound is muted. During EE operation it is not possible to receive a station. Test signal is missing. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • No picture during playback. Depending on the appliance there is standard sound or Hi-Fi stereo sound. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Dead. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • During HF-recording and HF-playback there is occasionally no sound.
  • Fuse 401 in PSU blows continuously. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Retracts cassette again after it has been ejected.
  • Changes in the customer instructions (see S.3-23).
  • Back tension arm does not return to correct position when unloading.
  • Worm gear repairing set installation.
  • Defective components after defective PSU.
  • Appliance lowers the cassette, initializes jerkily and sometimes forms tape loops. The tape is torn or not enough tension on the reel table. Appliance shows F7 or F8.
  • Appliance switches to playback. No picture recording, only noise in the picture. (picture attached)
  • During own recording and occasionally during playback there are lines in the picture after playing for a certain time. The picture jitters vertically and the sound goes out of tune.
  • Occasionally there are interference lines or disturbances across the whole picture with no sound.
  • Deck moves up/down and in/out.

  • How to clean video head.
  • After playing for a short time the picture is torn, occasionally the colour disappears or there are partly black lines or the picture is completely black.
  • Picture comes too late when you switch to playback (4-5sec). (picture attached)
  • Counter runs the wrong way.
  • Bad recording, REC button does not function.
  • The tape is cut at the lower edge of the tape on the guide flange (exploded diagram nr.147).
  • PAL chrominance REC current adjustment

  • OK for short time from standby or when tape inserted; then immediately ejects tape and goes back to standby.

  • The appliance does not initialise when the cassette has lowered. The display shows F6 but during service function A5 the appliance can be operated.
  • Occasionally, after cassette has been introduced, pre-loading does not occur. Cassette has to be ejected again. If PLAY button is pressed, appliance switches off. It can be restarted only after disconnecting mains.

  • Dark display.

  • No eject. Does not accept cassette when manually wound; PB and REC OK.
  • Occasionally no Y signal in PB then only colour present or wide white horizontal stripes appear in the picture. (picture attached)
  • Appliance malfunctions ie. plays when the play button is pushed, no eject, the display shows always 4 and goes only to forward and rewind.

  • Output voltage +5V adjustment.
  • Appliance does not accept any functions. If the keys are pressed the display disappears. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Appliance takes the cassette in, laces up, but the video head does not come up to the correct speed.
  • In CUE, REV and PB, ripple line jitter (slip-stick of vertical and horizontal lines).

  • Video heads get dirty each time the cassette is ejected.

  • Locks up during REW.
  • Tape spillage at times.
  • Cassette occasionally will not eject and remains in the compartment.
  • Slow lace up. No eject.
  • Drive does not work correctly and is noisy.
  • Display continuously shows no cassette.

  • Brake does not function when winding. Tape loops at beginning after REW.
  • The brass tape lever next to the pinch roller twitches during play, the take- up reel runs jerkily.
