2SB5703 / PHILIPS [Video recorder - VHS HiFi]

List of fault symptoms:
  • No eject. Does not accept cassette when manually wound; PB and REC OK.
  • In PB goes to fFF or REW by itself. (part of circuit diagram displayed)

  • Cassette is accepted but the appliance does not initialise. In service functio A5 the tape laces up and both capstan motor and video head turn.
  • SECAM Bd.1-AFC-tuning adjustment.
  • Ejects cassette after one second in PB.
  • After a time the sound is intermittent, therefore it is either loud or quiet or the level varies. (2SB5703 PHILIPS repair tip)

  • Slow or no loading
  • No PB. Eats tape.

  • During playback the appliance switches back and forth between AV picture and the HF modulator picture. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • No brake (supply spool) at end of REW or FFRWD.

  • In record mode, set switches accidentally to E1; display gets confused.
  • Reduced back up time. (2SB5703 tips)

  • After running for a long time in EE mode the bands go off tune.
  • Cassette is not retracted. Display lights up. No function.
  • Playback does not work. The tape laces up but no tape transportation. After a while F3 appears in the display. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Poor tracking.
  • The tape is cut at the lower edge of the tape on the guide flange (exploded diagram nr.147).

  • Sound hums on prerecorded cassettes. During own recordings no sound. (picture attached)
  • Picture is badly distorted, bars are visible. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • OK for short time from standby or when tape inserted; then immediately ejects tape and goes back to standby.
  • No colour. in E-E.
  • The right reel table does not run, appliance forms tape loops and shows F6 on the display.

  • Cassette is ejected.
  • Defective driver, clatters, accepts no tape.
  • Intermittent FF and REW. Tape loops on EJECT.
  • Locks up during REW.
  • Creases tapes. Noise bands on screen. Displays "TRACK". (2SB5703 tip from PHILIPS)
  • Timer frequency adjustment.
  • Occasionally there are interference lines or disturbances across the whole picture with no sound.
  • The brass tape lever next to the pinch roller twitches during play, the take- up reel runs jerkily. (PHILIPS - 2SB5703 information)
  • No audio.
  • The picture jumps from left to right (picture attached)
  • After playing for a long time the appliance does not unlace.

  • Head sticking (binding). (2SB5703 PHILIPS repair tip)
  • Horizontal lines. in PB. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • No picture during EE or record. In playback interference lines run through on the screen (no picture). (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Display blinks, and/or a few segments light. (picture attached)
  • Cassette occasionally will not eject and remains in the compartment.
  • FFWD faulty.
  • Tape winds round capstan shaft when cassette has lowered. Display shows F1. In service function A5 the compartment goes down, capstan shaft turns immediately and transport ring turns slowly when lacing up. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Volume varies. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Deck jammed.
  • Occasionally no Y signal in PB then only colour present or wide white horizontal stripes appear in the picture. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Occasionally the colon between the hours and minutes in the time do not flash (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Cassette deck doesn't come to HALFLOAD position when cassette is inserted.
  • With some cassettes the appliance does not initialise.
  • Interference zones repeat periodically in the picture and the sound is intermittent. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Appliance does not take any function, the display does not light but all voltages are present. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Disturbance bands run through during picture search function. (picture attached)
  • Rattling in fast forward.
  • Appliance does not initialise correctly. Tape loops form on the pinch roller and the display shows F1 or F7.
  • Changes in the customer instructions (see S.3-23).

  • Display dark, motors turn but no function.

  • Tape stuck inside when switching from REW or FF to eject.
  • Distorted audio and tracking lines.
  • Occasionally, after cassette has been introduced, pre-loading does not occur. Cassette has to be ejected again. If PLAY button is pressed, appliance switches off. It can be restarted only after disconnecting mains.
  • Switches between SP and LP at playback. Time-indicator changes.

  • Reduced backup time (> WD10).
  • Tape forms loops. When operating in service function A 5 the appliance laces up, but the video head and capstan do not turn. No further functions are taken. (picture attached)

  • Lift does not stop by eject.
  • Poor picture, set blocks.
  • Appliance lowers the cassette, initializes jerkily and sometimes forms tape loops. The tape is torn or not enough tension on the reel table. Appliance shows F7 or F8. (2SB5703 tips)
  • Switches off REC and PB sometimes, unlaces and rewinds.
  • Wavy verticals in playback and/or FF/REW picture search.
  • Picture comes too late when you switch to playback (4-5sec). (picture attached)
  • Appliance does not accept the cassette (not even in service function A5)
  • No FF. No REW.
  • Erratic picture. Poor tracking. Coloured spots.
  • Occasionally the appliance does not go to forward, playback or other tape drive functions. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • During recording the sound is distorted or hums. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Counter runs the wrong way.
  • The top segments in the display light continuously. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Worm gear repairing set installation.

  • No picture in viewfinder, mainly on UHF high channels.
  • PSU whistles. after start-up. No display. (picture attached)
  • During playback and EE operation the Y-signal is missing but the colour is present. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Tapes tangle, sometimes eject and sometimes just switch off when PB.
  • Tracking ok in normal play. After REV defective tracking at tape exit. FM carrier shows pinch effect. Picture ok in CUE.
  • Appliance lowers the cassette compartment, does not initialise and laces up immediately. Capstan motor does not run. Appliance unlaces and shows F1 in the display.

  • Vertical ripple line jitter.
  • How to clean video head.
  • Capstan runs in intervals either too fast to stops.
  • After switching on the capstan and reel motors run. (picture attached)
  • Defective components after defective PSU.
  • Appliance takes the cassette in, laces up, but the video head does not come up to the correct speed.
  • Drive does not work correctly and is noisy.

  • No function after inserting a cassette. "No cassette" in the display. Lacing motor does not start up.
  • The appliance does not lower the cassette. In service function A5 the cassette is accepted, laced up and appliance goes to playback. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Poor picture.
  • During playback the FM carrier are missing. The picture appears black and white or shows sometimes black and white lines. Occasionally the sound is present.
  • Erasing frequency adjustment.
  • Sync level frequency adjustment.
  • During playback of prerecorded cassette occasionally the colour goes totally and the picture folds over in the top third.
  • No time and date indication on the display. Tape time indication does not change during playback or forward and rewind. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • No tape length indication, the counter is ok.
  • FF and REW do not function correctly or not at all. (2SB5703 tips)
  • Mechanism blocks.
  • Sound drones and picture has interference lines. (2SB5703 PHILIPS repair tip)
  • VCR 1 - VCR 2. Adjustment of VCR; adjustment of RC. The adjustment must be performed if the VCR works via front keys and it displays VCR 1 (or 2) via RC.
  • Poor eject then goes into safety.
  • Cassette is accepted and then ejected with tape loops. REW appears on display.
  • Appliance takes the cassette in and the reel motor runs jerkily. (picture attached)
  • No loading. Arms go back and forth then ejects.
  • Accepts tape, but no mechanical operation. Not eject.
  • Occasionally interference lines or disturbances across the whole picture and also no sound.
  • Interference lines appear in the picture after 1 -1.5 hrs, appears like picture search. Sound oscillation can be heard in the background.
  • Bias current adjustment. (PHILIPS - 2SB5703 information)
  • Poor tape guide at pinch roller.
  • PAL/SECAM-AFC tuning.
  • When the appliance is set to playback it laces up, but the video head does not turn. Appliance unlaces and shows F 4 on the display. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Starts up ok but noise coming from the power supply relay. Cassette is not loaded.
  • Reel brakes not operating.

  • No loading or unloading. Stuck half way. (PHILIPS - 2SB5703 information)

  • Output voltage +5V adjustment.

  • Does not load tape.
  • The cassette compartment lowers and the appliance laces up and the capstan motor does not turn. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • The appliance accepts the cassette but does not correctly initialise and shows F7 in the display. The capstan motor does not turn.
  • No tuning. Black screen. (2SB5703 tip from PHILIPS)
  • The test generator picture is the wrong way round and distorted, no EE picture. During playback there is sound but no picture. (picture attached)
  • PAL chrominance REC current adjustment
  • Appliance does not accept any functions. If the keys are pressed the display disappears. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Does not lace up correctly. PB only after pushing play button twice. Tape loops. Cassette is not always accepted
  • No sound during playback, sound is muted. During EE operation it is not possible to receive a station. Test signal is missing. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • New lacing motor for decks with production code WD43 and higher.
  • Timing of the Show View REC.

  • Occasionally chassis does not carry out functions.
  • The first few minutes after receiving power appliance does not accept any commands. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • No mechanism operation.
  • When unlacing the tape lever remains pressed on and the threading ring does not go to its starting position.
  • Timer REC with a SAT receiver.
  • No test generator picture and no EE operation. (picture attached)
  • Tape sticks during forward and rewind and occasionally during PB according to the type of cassette.
  • No sound after recording, sound from previous recording is not erased.

  • After changing the ERASE/REC/PB head, REV picture search does not function.
  • During playback of own recording the picture is not erased, the sound can be heard. (PHILIPS - 2SB5703 information)
  • The reel tacho pulses are too small.
  • Does not load tape. intermittently.
  • Bad recording, REC button does not function.
  • Lound noise from mechanism. When ejecting tape, lift loads again and ejects by itself several times.
  • When machine goes into record mode a pop is recorded on the audio track. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • PAL-AFC-tuning.
  • Volume varies. in REC.
  • Power supply no function.
  • During HF-recording and HF-playback there is occasionally no sound.
  • Fuse 401 in PSU blows continuously. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • During own recording and occasionally during playback there are lines in the picture after playing for a certain time. The picture jitters vertically and the sound goes out of tune.
  • After playing for one hour, switches by itself from PB to REW.
  • During own recording there is interference in the picture but playback is ok. (2SB5703 PHILIPS repair tip)
  • The sound is distorted and the magnetic recording bias voltage is too low. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Rattle during lace-up.

  • No OSD.

  • No longer possible to operate appliance or data line is blocked.

  • During playback of own recording the picture in the background is not correctly erased. Sound can be heard in the background.
  • Chassis does not respond to anything. Display OK.
  • Tape is ejected. in REC.
  • PDC is sometimes not indicated in the display. Occasionally the appliance does not respond to the signal of the station. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Retracts cassette again after it has been ejected.
  • Squeaks when lacing up or during unlacing. Does not eject and the lacing belt slips through.

  • Tape spillage at times.
  • Slow lace up. No eject.
  • Tape is not fully laced into the cassette when ejecting (tape loop with tape damage). Slow FFW and switches back to picture search

  • Brake does not function when winding. Tape loops at beginning after REW.
  • Cassette is ejected and is immediately retracted. This way it gets stuck once in a while. PSU must be pulled in for turning off.
  • Display continuously shows no cassette.

  • Software adjustment of gap positions.

  • Cassette flap does not open. Cassette cannot be removed.
  • Tape looping intermittently.

  • No picture in viewfinder in PB and test picture generator mode.
  • The cassette compartment does not lower and the compartment guide is bent.
  • Squeaking from the appliance and waves in the picture after some time.

  • PB level adjustment.
  • Deck moves up/down and in/out.
  • After inserting the cassette, display shows "LOCKED".

  • After playing for a short time the picture is torn, occasionally the colour disappears or there are partly black lines or the picture is completely black.

  • Accepts cassette, laces up but head drum does not start. After a while F4 appears in display. In EE operation no station received. No test signal. (picture attached)
  • When trying to eject the cassette, it jams on the upper part of the operating panel.

  • Chassis does not reach half loading position after accepting tape.
  • Appliance malfunctions ie. plays when the play button is pushed, no eject, the display shows always 4 and goes only to forward and rewind.

  • The Burndy plug is intermittent.
  • Cassette is briefly accepted, laces up a little bit, then fast forwards briefly and cassette is ejected again.
