CTC169BJ5 / PROSCAN [TV (chassis)]

List of fault symptoms:
  • No video, both large and small in PIP.
  • Colour fades in and out. Picture waves.
  • No picture. In SCAN LOSS mode.
  • The picture had a small amount of Vertical jitter. The problem showed up more when the unit was warm.
  • PICTURE FLASHES - PULSE TYPE NOISE IS HEARD
  • Shutdown intermittent. R4767 in HV regulation circuit was overheating and set would go into hard shutdown. All scan sources were somewhat high (10%).
  • Negative picture. Blue tint. With PIP on, video OK. Using V1 input, video OK.
  • Syscon disfunctional (missing menu, osd for example)
  • Lch audio drops when volume is raised above mid-level. Rch continues to increase as volume is raised. As volume is increased further, Lch audio level returns to that of Rch.
  • Green picture. in PIP.
  • No audio after surge on AC line. Picture distorted. Autoprograms OK. (PROSCAN - CTC169BJ5 information)
  • CRT filaments out. Picture gradually darkens.
  • X-Ray protection shutdown.
  • No colour on channel 3. Colour OK on channel 7.
  • No raster (intermittently).
  • Bowed pix edges. When the set was first turned on, the picture was good, but after the set warmed up, the sides would bow in.
  • Picture too small.
  • Audio level goes up and down when watching a program.
  • Horizontal lines. Vertical lines.
  • Blank picture intermittently. Black picture for a few seconds, then flashes on a second and off again at start-up. Black picture for a few seconds, then flashes on a second and off again when changing channels. (CTC169BJ5 tip from PROSCAN)
  • Erratic memory function. Information on screen different than that selected on RC.
  • At switch on, lines across picture and intermittent vertical bouncing.
  • Excessive brightness.
  • Vertical bars. on the left.
  • Switches to standby. at start-up.
  • Intermittent vertical jitter with distortion on upper left and lower right corners of picture. Looks something like keystone effect.
  • Reduced vertical on bottom, or poor linearity.
  • Vertical foldover at bottom.
  • Flyback transformer goes S/C after a couple of hours of operation.
  • The unit pulses on/off.
  • Low audio. Buzz in audio. on the right.
  • DARK PICTURE WITH WHITE DASHES THROUGH IT
  • Hi voltage missing. Removing the red wire from the High voltage to the focus block allowed the high voltage to return.
  • Snowy pix (int) on 2-6, 14-17
  • No functions. after power failure.
  • Doming in high contrast scenes.
  • Q4101 BLOWS AT TURN ON.
  • Dead or extreme pincushion distortion. (CTC169BJ5 tips)
  • Bright pix w/retrace. brightness varies w/focus. (crt focus-g2 short):
  • Expanded Stereo inop. The speakers cannot be turned off when in the expanded stereo mode.
  • Reduced vertical size. intermittently.
  • Tuning inop. The set will not tune channel 2.
  • Cycles on/off. intermittently.
  • Convergence. The set had no adjustment of right and left vertical lines.
  • ON-SCREEN ADJ WENT MINIMUM WHEN AUTOPROGRAM INITIATED
  • No or weak colour.
  • Colour goes out sometimes will not come back in
  • Dead. White raster lines.
  • Pulsing interference in audio.
  • Distorted picture.
  • Dead on full line voltage. Lowering line voltage using variac produces small picture without colour.
  • Black screen. after a while.
  • Pix bright with Retrace lines. The 200V supply was low. The 200V was at 60V with kine socket connected and dropped to 9V when the kine socket was disconnected. The pulse from pin 10 of flyback was OK but was not getting through an open capacitor (C471 (PROSCAN - CTC169BJ5 information)
  • Snow and poor IF AGC.
  • Shuts down. after start-up.
  • Q4101 shorts after running hot for about 3 hrs. With TV off, regulator runs all day without overheating Q4101.
  • Reduced vertical deflection.
  • Picture small and pulled in on all sides.
  • Noise and lines in picture with PIP off until warm.
  • Picture reduces size during bright scenes.
  • Set struck by lightning - Dead set. After replacing the tuner selector CBA, sync CBA, power supply and power sub, antenna switch, IC601, DL302, and DL303, had video missing.
  • When the power button is pressed, the unit Pulses on/off.
  • Black screen intermittently. AUX1 and audio OK.

  • Picture bends at 2/3 of bottom. (PROSCAN - CTC169BJ5 information)
  • Memory error. Incorrect numeric informations on screen other than inputted from RC.
  • Lines, white (int) throughout the pix
  • Reduced vertical size. at top.
  • Picture zoom, freeze, channel guide, and PIP out of horizontal frequency.
  • No horizontal synchronisation.
  • No colour. Audio OK .
  • Black screen with parental control displayed. Controls inoperative. (CTC169BJ5 tips)
  • Turns on and off by itself, power switch has no effect.
  • Function controls inoperative. Incorrect functions from front panel buttons.
  • White line with faint red line immediately above it, across screen. Smell.
  • Audio distorted. Sounds like high frequency distortion, like lisp. Present with both external and tuner audio.
  • Picture shifted vertically. at top. Vertical foldover at top.
  • No start-up. Pulsing from speakers.
  • No big picture when using PIP. Small picture OK.
  • Colour bleeds pink or red. Flesh tones off.
  • No brightness. intermittently. Colour OK .
  • RETRACE LINES WITH PICTURE BRIGHT BLUE
  • Bright picture. after a few minutes. Retrace lines. after a few minutes. (CTC169BJ5 tip from PROSCAN)
  • Audio missing. Found audio mute lines active. Traced problem to a broken copper trace on the data line at pin 5 of JS1900.
  • Pix missing on all channels. Audio rushing on low VHF channels, but good audio on the high VHF channels.
  • Picture OK at turn on, then slowly goes to black screen.
  • Small PIP flashes between light and dark.
  • Low audio. intermittently.
  • Video missing but audio was normal. Video was present on pin 5 and 3 of the d-pip board connector J8002, but not on pin 1. Looking at U8001 pin 8, there was no video. Q8001 was not soldered in.
  • No PIP when PIP window moved to lower left corner.
  • No picture. No audio. OSD shifts left. Foldover.
  • No raster.
  • Blue spot in centre screen after power off.
  • Washed out picture.
  • Cannot adjust red convergence.
  • No autoprogram. Locking into stations takes a long time.
  • Lines across picture.
  • Line, white across. smelled. faint red line above white
  • Loses colour intermittently, then no start-up.

  • Dead set. Pin 16 of U4101 reading 8.2V. Pin 15 reading of U4101 was 10.4V.
  • The top Horizontal lines were bowed down and the bottom horizontal lines were bowed up. (CTC169BJ5 PROSCAN repair tip)
  • Blue picture.
  • Vertical roll. after warm-up.
  • Picture dim. Raster out of focus. Dynamic focus controls have little effect on raster.
  • Picture bowed on the sides. Poor pincushion. (service info for PROSCAN -CTC169BJ5)
  • U4101 and Q4101 S/C.
  • Audio buzz from speakers when power off. (service info for PROSCAN -CTC169BJ5)
  • Shuts down (intermittently).
  • Service info:
  • Reduced horizontal size.
  • No picture. Selecting AUX1 and applying external signal from VCR doesn't produce picture. (CTC169BJ5 PROSCAN repair tip)
  • Intermittent video. Picture and colour black out once every day or two.
  • Excessive horizontal size. Pincushion distortion. on sides.
  • Pix in pix inop. The pix in pix was shown on the display but there was no box on the screen. Troubleshooting the pix-in-pix microprocessor (U8001) revealed all the data and clock lines were normal. The oscillator on pins 25 and 26 was not operating.
  • During dark scenes a V shaped area appears.
  • Intermittent shutdown, usually with high humidity.
  • Pix small. The regulated B+ was at 115VDC. The PWM pulse was missing from pin 2 of U4101. Resistor (R4143) was open.
  • No colour on AUX1. OK when using AUX2 and tuner signal.
  • Colour goes out sometimes will not come back in. convergence problem
  • No HV. (PROSCAN - CTC169BJ5 information)
  • Video flashes on and off. Convergence bounces.
  • No picture. All picture controls would go to zero during picture reset or when changing channels. If re-adjusting picture settings picture appears but when changing channels picture goes black again.
  • Shuts down when turned on if the antenna is connected. Disconnecting the antenna allows the set to turn on. After reconnecting the antenna, picture is present until the channel switch-over is performed. The set would then shut down. OSD also missing.
  • Vertical bow with foldover.
  • Picture distorted. Picture has backward C pattern in it. Vertical height appears slightly overscanned.
  • HV comes on for 1 sec then goes to shutdown. Possibly hear or smell arcing.
  • Dead. made a loud popping noise sound before it died
  • Picture washed-out. During blanking, faint retrace lines in video.
  • No audio or low level hum in speakers.
  • HV comes up then shuts down.
  • Audio was normal, but Video missing. The scan loss (IC7005) was missing B+. U7004 (the AUX regulator IC) had 7V B+ with no voltages present on any other pins. Q7051 had 22V on the emitter and 7V on the base.
  • The set had loud Audio buzz when it was turned off. The buzz would cease when the set was turned on.
  • No horizontal deflection. Line straight up and down.

  • Lightning damage. No audio. Low level hum in speakers.
  • Excessive brightness. after start-up. Shuts down.
  • Vertical line. in the centre.
  • Dark picture. intermittently. Colour OK .
  • When using PIP, small picture rolls through big picture. Both big and small pictures showed normal horizontal and vertical sync.
  • No colour. intermittently.
  • Video distorted. Sync distorted on normal picture. Good video on both selected video and IF video inputs.
  • Expanded stereo inoperative.
  • The set had a green vertical Convergence problem.

  • Function key carries out incorrect functions. Remote OK.
  • POOR CONVERGENCE & BOWED PIX EDGES
  • OSD missing. Pix missing when in tuner mode. The set Pulses on/off. U3101 pins 25 and 26 (OSD PLL) were at 0 volts. U3101 pins 23 and 24 (horz/vert sync), pin 23 had a 1.5Vp-p signal and pin 24 had a 2Vp-p signal. When the set was off channel, it woul (CTC169BJ5 tip from PROSCAN)
  • Excessive HV, more than 30KV.
  • No brightness.
  • No N-S pincushion correction. Vertical convergence controls have little effect.
  • Q4702 is hot and causes intermittent shut-down.
  • PICTURE BRIGHT & GOES IN & OUT OF FOCUS
  • No raster. Audio OK .
  • Set would play for fifteen minutes and then start Vertical jitter. The jitter would increase as the set warmed up.
  • Plays for 4 to 8 hours then goes into over-current shutdown.
  • Tuning slow. Remote inoperative. Bright picture intermittently. Shuts down intermittently.
  • Incorrect audio balance.
  • Reduced vertical scan. (PROSCAN - CTC169BJ5 information)
  • Raster shading. There were splotches on the sides of the raster. The picture was blanked on both sides.
  • The blue Convergence was six inches off of the green.
  • Starts up three times then switches off.
  • No picture. In PIP, no big picture, and small picture is out of sync.
  • Horizontal jitter.
  • Buzzing from PSU. in standby.
  • Intermittent dark spots on picture.
  • Dead set. There was a Buzzing sound from the chopper regulator circuit.
  • Shutdown. As soon as the high voltage comes up, the unit shuts down.
  • Vertical jitter. intermittently. Vertical foldover.
  • Low audio with balance control centered.
  • PIP MODE - SMALL PICTURE TINT SHIFTED TOWARD BLUE
  • Intermittent shutdown for few wks before going dead.
  • Squealing noise.
  • No colour in the small picture when in PIP mode. Also no colour in the main picture with channel 91 or 92 selected.
  • No audio from internal speakers, OK on external ones.
  • Negative picture. No colour.
  • Intermittent picture with retrace line caused when changing channel.

  • No control of AUDIO DOWN.
  • Bright pix w/retrace (int) changing ch can cause
  • Has normal standby voltage, but goes into shutdown after sec of HV.
  • Minor pie-crusting at edges.
  • Erratic function control from FP.

  • In PIP mode, small picture tint shifted toward blue.
  • Green convergence poor.
  • Intermittent Dead set. Sometimes the set would power up and operate normally. Other times the set would power up and then shut off.
  • Pulses, then shuts down.

  • One third vertical deflection.
  • Negative picture. Colour missing.
  • Vertical foldover at bottom of picture. Decreased deflection 1 in. from bottom of screen.
  • Faint distorted audio after power surge.
  • No horizontal deflection.
  • The TV had experienced Int shutdown for a few weeks and then went to a Dead set condition.
  • No picture. All controls go to 0. Doesn't hold setups.
  • Ticking noise. at switch-off.
  • SILVER PICTURE - POOR CONTRAST
  • Slow to warm up and/or black streaks in picture.
  • Vertical reduced at bottom. Lines at top.
  • Vertical line down middle. No vertical sweep.
  • Shuts down after warm-up. Blank blocks instead of OSD. Erratic or inoprative control panel.
  • Negative picture when cold. Fault disappear when PIP function is selected within the first minutes.
  • Picture about 3/4 inch narrower at bottom of screen than at top.
  • No vertical synchronisation. when changing channels.
  • Dim picture. Raster is out of focus.

  • Beat pattern in picture on channels 23-25. After warm-up, picture OK.
  • Remote control (CRK59) not working.
  • Bright red raster during channel change. When OSD prompted, red outline around OSD characters.
  • No RC functions.
  • No red, tint, or wrong colour.
  • Comes on for a short time. (PROSCAN - CTC169BJ5 information)
  • Horizontal output transistor shorts after a couple of hours of operation.
  • Unit had Poor regulation during scene changes.
  • Herringbone interference in large picture. No colour in small picture when in PIP.
  • Shutdown (dead) cold start, starts at reduced AC
  • No antenna A to B switching. No PIP.
  • Yellow spots in picture.
  • Dead. No turn-on if POWER pressed within 30 sec of plugging set in.
  • Raster bright red.
  • Vertical bow at top. Foldover and slight distortion at top right.
  • Channel display. The set displays channel 00 when turned on. If a valid channel is selected, it will be tuned properly. Autoprogram stores all valid channels. Attempting to enter channel 00 results in the tuning system reverting to the last valid channel
  • No HV. Blows Q4801.
  • No or intermittent audio.

  • Pincushion problem. pix expanded. osd graphics "03" shows "0"
  • No picture. OSD and audio OK. When G2 turned up, retrace lines visible.
  • Jail bars on left. Most noticeable on a blank scene with brightness turned all the way up.

  • Raster bright red during channel change. When OSD is prompted, there would be a red outline around the OSD characters (OSD w/red outline).
  • Screen dark with very little video content.
  • No picture in large picture mode.
  • No colour in big picture.
  • Vertical linearity incorrect. The bottom of the raster was pulled up and the top was slightly folded over.
  • Vertical reduced. The raster was about 4 inches short on all four sides.
  • Intermittently shutsdown on cold start-up or when changing channels.
  • No brightness. Audio and OSD OK .
  • Chassis pulses and makes chirping sound.

  • No picture. SCAN LOSS activated.
  • No colour in both TV and AUX.
  • No start-up. HV can be heard.
  • Buzz from chassis during scene changes.
  • Pulsating picture.
  • IN PIX-IN-PIX SMALL PIX WAS SOLID GREEN W/NO VIDEO
  • Dark picture. after warm-up.
  • No PIP.
  • Normal (big) Pix missing. The pix in pix (small pix) was present, but was in black and white. (service info for PROSCAN -CTC169BJ5)
  • Brightness difference across screen during dark scenes. V-shaped area. Inside V is slightly brighter than outside area.
  • Lines in picture. Squealing noise.
  • Dead.
  • Hum in audio. Dead. PSU pulsates.
  • Intermittent snowy picture on channels 2-6 and 14-17.
  • Shuts down. after a few seconds.
  • Distorted picture. No colour intermittently. External video OK. In PIP mode picture OK.
  • Intermittently goes static and fades low.
  • Pix green. Q5001 collector measured 275 volts. This transistor is supplied by the 200-volt supply which checked OK.
  • Noise in picture.
  • Poor convergence (after warm-up).
  • HV comes up then immediately shutsdown. OK at 110V variac.
  • No video. When selecting PIP, small picture comes up, but still no large picture. Audio OK.
  • OSD malfunction. OSD shifted 6-8 in. to right of screen. Overall picture centered correctly. (service info for PROSCAN -CTC169BJ5)
  • Vertical pulled down about 1/4 from top. Top of screen flags horizontally. Picture seems wide. Adjusting width control has little or no effect. (CTC169BJ5 PROSCAN repair tip)
  • Convergence out on both red and blue horizontal linearity. Controls for this adjustment have little or no effect.
  • Pulsing on/off. The set would turn on, then turn off and then on again. The set would cycle this way indefinitely.
  • Video missing, Dark screen, audio OK. Checking in the scan loss had 4.9VDC. No problem found in the vertical circuit. Checking the scan loss power supply, the waveforms on the regulator output (Q7037) were pulsing from about 45V p-p to 240V p-p.
  • Shutdown using VCR in forward search mode only. TV stays on with VCR in playback and search reverse. High voltage increased 3kV during search forward.
  • Pincushion distortion. at top and bottom. Convergence off.
  • Constant horizontal drift pattern in the background. No synchronisation lock in PIP mode.
  • Picture has dark spot on channels 23, 24, and 25 in the lower centre of picture. The spot varied in size and position as the scene content changed. (service info for PROSCAN -CTC169BJ5)
  • No colour. Good B/W picture and good audio.
  • No video in TV mode. AUX video OK.
  • Audio doesn't adjust.
  • No or dim picture.
  • Yellow spots appeared in the picture.
  • Video distortion. Double picture with slight tearing.
  • Low Audio level with the balance control centered. Turning the balance to one side or the other produced good volume from either speaker.
  • Cycles on/off. Power LED lit .
  • To activate video input.
  • DOUBLE PICTURE WITH SLIGHT TEARING
  • Faint vertical line in picture.
  • No picture. Arcing from audio.
  • Picture grainy and noisy.
  • Tries to run, but chopper goes into shutdown after approximately 4 sec.
  • High pitched squeel in power supply, slight tear in pix...
  • 4 or 5 vertical lines on the left side of the screen.
  • Audio hiss and pop. Non-linear volume control.
  • No auto programming.
  • All customer controlled on-screen adjustments go to minimum when AUTOPROGRAM initiated.
  • No picture. No audio. OSD blocks instead of characters.
  • ROLLING SMALL PICTURE WHEN USING PIX-IN-PIX
  • Picture missing when going through U1401 video switch.
  • Picture bowed upward in centre.
  • No picture. Only parent control on-screen.
  • No colour. Picture green. OSD OK.
  • No zoom. in PIP.
  • Pix compressed. Poor regulation. Regulated B+ in the run mode was 118V. There was no horizontal sync. In standby the B+ was 140V.
  • Poor regulation during scene changes.
  • Negative picture for short period. (CTC169BJ5 tips)
  • Diagonal beat pattern only on channel 7.
  • Intermittent impurity pattern.
  • Horizontal, linearity, and convergence incorrect. (PROSCAN - CTC169BJ5 information)
  • Audio distorted with loud rushing noise. Main channel audio almost completely covered up by noise. SAP sounds OK and clean.
  • Dark screen. Poor convergence poor. OSD shifted. No audio.
  • Small picture tint shifted towards the blue in PIP.
  • Set would try to come on, then R4713 overheated and the set would Shutdown.
  • Audio buzz with high video content.
  • Picture expanded. OSD graphics "03" shows "0".
  • Doesn't store channels during AUTOPROGRAM.
  • Shutdown. Dead. At plug in, pulses 4-5 times, then goes dead. Unplug and wait until U4101 pin 16 drains off, then plug it back in and symptom repeats.
  • No audio. via tuner.
  • Pix bowed when first turned on
  • Intermittent shutdown. Shutdown doesn't seem to occur in any set pattern. Operates for 2 wk on continuous PB without failure.
  • No CLOSED CAPTION using S-video input.
  • Centre of picture converges. Outward edges, both horizontal and vertical, bowed and out of convergence. About 1/2 of convergence controls don't work.
  • No PIP colour. Normal picture colour weak.
  • INCORRECT FUNCTIONS FROM FRONT PANEL BUTTONS
  • No audio. Tuning OK .
  • Muted audio.
  • Negative picture when cold. Picture negative and video signals low for first 5 min of operation. As set warms up, video signal coming out of U1401 slowly increases in amplitude until picture normal.
  • Repeated IHVT failure. Raster flashes when PCB is tapped. (CTC169BJ5 PROSCAN repair tip)
  • No low band tuning during autoprogram. All channels slow to lock.
  • Pincushion distortion.
  • Picture pulled in on all sides.
  • No picture. Briefly flashes on sometimes.
  • Volume uncontrollable.
  • No PIP. No OSD. intermittently.
  • PIP on display, but no box on screen. (CTC169BJ5 tip from PROSCAN)
  • No synchronisation. intermittently. Lines in picture. intermittently.
  • No Closed caption. From the set up menu the desired closed caption could be selected. However, there was no text displayed on the screen.
  • No picture. Dark screen. Audio OK .
  • Excessive vertical size.
  • Bright lines in picture.
  • Intermittent bull's-eye pattern. Arcing and band of distortion going through picture.
  • No video during normal operation, but has both large and small pictures with PIP selected.
  • Neck of CRT sheared off. Replaced the CRT but after about one minute of operation, the new tube shorted. No vertical deflection. It appears that this caused the beam to deflect into the elements of the CRT causing them to heat up.
  • Dark picture. intermittently. No brightness control.
  • A faint V-shaped Shading of the raster was visible in Pix in pix mode. When activating PIP, a faint shading of the raster was visible in both the big pix and small pix.
  • After picture swap, big picture pulls up 2 in. from bottom and small picture rolls once and locks in. Before swap, both big picture and little picture OK.
  • No audio. after power failure.
  • No video in normal TV mode. Both large and small picture present in PIP mode.
  • Vert collapse. When vertical kill transistor was defeated, the set had vertical deflection but purity was very bad.

  • Q4802 repeatedly fails. (CTC169BJ5 tip from PROSCAN)
  • White line from top left of picture to centre of picture.
  • Dead. Relay clicks .

  • Distorted video. Poor quality luma. Picture lacks depth of field and looks like painting.

  • Foam tape on top and sides of screen is separating and moving behind screen.
  • Dead set. Grounding pin 2 of U4101 (regulator), the set would run in the standby mode. The PWM pulse on Q4107 (PWM AMP) base and collector looked normal for the standby mode.
  • Picture small but linear.
  • No colour in big pix. Colour missing on both pictures when in the pix-in-pix mode. Traced the problem to PIP module. Found Q8208 emitter and base reading 12V. Measured the resistance across R8224 and found it to be 30k ohms.
  • Arcing.
  • Brightness excessive w/retrace. screen controls no effect.
  • Dead. Comes on at lowered line voltage. Regulator B+>160V in standby. (CTC169BJ5 tip from PROSCAN)
  • The small picture (PIP) rolls through the large pix and then fades out.
  • The set came in for a no start condition. It would cycle three times and then Shutdown.
  • Circuit breaker pops instantly.
  • No PIP. Small picture rolls through big picture.
  • Shutdown intermittent. Wait for 15 minutes and set could again be powered on. Noted that the horizontal deflection would collapse before the unit went completely dead.

  • Pincushion distortion. when cold.

  • Red picture. when changing channels. Retrace lines. when changing channels.
  • Intermittent picture. Picture drops out or convergence distorts. Convergence shifts prior to losing picture.
  • Volume uncontrollable. OSD OK .

  • Dead. IHVT failure. IHVT shorts instantly at turn-on. When CR4402 is replaced, there is a pincushion bow on all 4 sides of picture. Both CR4402 and IHVT short again at turn-on.
