4204 / SBR [TV]

List of fault symptoms:
  • No or weak colour.

  • Poor picture quality, smearing, milkiness, glistening peak whites or insufficient brightness.

  • Only standby after switch on via power switch.
  • Focus problems.
  • When cold HT varies.
  • Vertical lines.
  • 14" picture tube.

  • Hiss in audio.
  • No blue.
  • No line synchronisation.
  • Field scanning collapses to a non-linear six-inch band through the middle of the screen.
  • No picture. Picture tube is hot and makes sounds.
  • Horizontal ripples (4204 SBR repair tip)
  • No function with manual or remote control operation apart from off/on.
  • Picture blanking on left side and cramping at bottom.
  • No vertical synchronisation.
  • Intermittent audio. (service info for SBR -4204)
  • Peak white raster.
  • Connection of a loop system to the TV.
  • Low brightness.
  • Hiccupping and low brilliance.
  • Flyback lines dependent on brightness/contrast settings.
  • No E/W correction. Pincushion distortion.
  • No picture.
  • No green.
  • No or poor picture. Audio OK .
  • Intermittently spontaneous variations of the user control levels (brightness, contrast, etc.).
  • Regulator blows at switch on.
  • No tuning. only on certain channels.
  • Loss of one or two colours.
  • Dead. Hiccups.
  • Poor horizontal synchronisation.
  • Intermittently volume at maximum.
  • Set would work normally for day but it would then suddenly trip two or three times, following by line pulling then shut down.
  • Does not start up. F3 appears on display.
  • Intermittent black lines at top of picture.
  • White screen. Audio OK .
  • No picture, blank raster until screen advanced then light screen with flyback lines.
  • Intermittent dropouts at switch on.
  • Excessive vertical size. Picture rolls.
  • The appliance does not function, the power supply gurgles; this can be heard slightly in the sound.
  • Horizontal size varies.
  • Poor sound (after module replaced).
  • Picture too green and cannot be adjusted. It improves after a while, picture tube OK.
  • No 9V. (service info for SBR -4204)
  • Frame scan too big or too small.
  • No picture, just a smear on chroma.
  • Dark picture when strong aerial input signal is present.
  • Protection mode activated.
  • Hanover bars.
  • Retrace lines G2 high.
  • Blank screen.
  • Flyback lines, picture turns white and disappears.
  • Maximum uncontrollable brightness. (4204 tips)
  • Excessive green.
  • Retrace lines (intermittently).
  • Tripping.
  • Text appears to be scrambled, but ok in mixed mode.
  • Poor channel set-up. Picture quivers.
  • No functions. after start-up. Fault occurs intermittently. .
  • Lines in picture. at top .
  • Colour control does not function.
  • Power supply ticking, OK when tripler disconnected.
  • Excessive red.
  • No remote functions, remote control LED is on.
  • PSU pulsates. No picture. No audio. LED is red .
  • Intermittent loss of signals, leaving a noise free raster.
  • Power supply makes a gurgling noise. 300V are present.
  • Remote working but not manual channel change or manual volume up/down, also on teletext if buttons only just touched, would double up or more on the numbers.
  • Faulty TXT.
  • No red. (4204 tips)
  • Rolling when brightness or contrast varied.
  • No vertical deflection.
  • Intermittent spontaneous variations of user control levels (brightness, contrast, etc.)
  • Intense brightness present occasionally with flash back lines.
  • Power supply "hiccups" when switching fluorescent lights on or off.
  • Replacement of tuner ECL2006 with UV418.
  • AGC problems.
  • Intermittent volume, brightness or colour changes.
  • Uncontrollable bright raster with flyback lines.
  • No synchronisation.
  • Starts up with retrace lines then shuts down after a while.
  • Bright picture.
  • Will not stop in search mode on K5 and/or K21.
  • Vertical foldover at top.
  • No synchronisation. in TXT.
  • Poor vertical linearity.
  • No red, permanently or intermittently.
  • Decoding errors on teletext.
  • Picture is poor or missing and/or sound is poor or missing.
  • Wide band of TXT lines in picture. (4204 SBR repair tip)
  • Vertical foldover at bottom. after a few hours.
  • 4 inches at the centre of the picture has teletext lines.
  • Blows chopper.
  • No start-up. Protection mode activated.
  • No or currupt TXT.
  • No horizontal deflection. (4204 tips)
  • Tripping. intermittently. White screen.
  • No picture. after warm-up.
  • When switched off in standby an horizontal bar appears across picture tube. No audio.
  • One colour missing.
  • Incorrect purity.
  • Defective E/W correction. Foldover of vertical elements in picture.
  • Intermittent flashing lines. Intermittent snow.
  • No picture. Partial chroma displayed.
  • No function, fuse V1291 is defective.
  • No picture. Raster OK .
  • Low horizontal amplitude after protection disabled by O/C 6560.
  • Picture alterations. (4204 SBR repair tip)
  • No green, permanently or intermittently.
  • Ghosting effect. (SBR - 4204 information)
  • Rustling in VHF. EHT discharge.
  • Tripping with tripler disconnected.
  • Horizontal roll.
  • Horizontal bars. intermittently.
  • No TXT.
  • Rail voltage is only 83V.
  • Pincushion distortion. on sides.
  • No colour. after warm-up.
  • Power supply dead, protection circuit triggered.
  • Erratic operation of channel change and/or RC.
  • When switched on from cold there would be intermittent line failure, wriggle flashing down the middle and tripping occurred.
  • Lower part of TXT display moving sideways.
  • Top of screen has partial field collapse.
  • Protection mode activated. Bright raster.
  • Spot on left side after switch off. (4204 tip from SBR)
  • No RC functions. No front panel function.
  • The picture is too big, the coil S490 is burnt.
  • Coloured spot after switch off.
  • Display only shows channel numbers. E1 and channels cannot be adjusted.
  • Colour fades to black and white after 2-3 hours. OK if left off for 10 mins then switched back on; then fault repeats.
  • Vertical collapse.
  • Processing of "not standard" signals.
  • Dark picture when tuned to a strong picture, ok when tuned to a weak picture.
  • 1/2 vertical scan.
  • Picture pulling at bottom of the text display.
  • Lines in picture when using Japanese video appliances.
  • Excessive brightness. Flyback lines. Vertical jitter.
  • Works ok for days then suddenly trips 2 or 3 times, followed by line pulling then shut down.
  • The TV does not switch on. A loud buzzing can be heard.
  • Narrow white bright line superimposed across the centre of the screen.
  • Bottom foldover, top stretch.
  • Line synchronisation and frame synchronisation are missing. (SBR - 4204 information)
  • On video text several letters are missing (mix-up).
  • Ok at switch on, but bending off verticals at the top of screen, getting worse as set warms up.
  • Switches on then off. EHT discharge is earthed. (SBR - 4204 information)
  • Interference usually with bright scenes with colours disappearing into hum bars.
  • Dropouts and EHT discharges when switching from very bright scenes to dark scenes (and vice versa).
  • Blank screen. after warm-up.
  • Tripping 2 to 3 times then has line pulling.

  • Replacement of IC SAF1031P with SAF1039P.
  • Modification for over sensitive trip circuit
  • Horizontal oscillation.
  • No functions. Stuck in standby.
  • Line oscillator off frequency.
  • The picture width cannot be controlled.
  • Lack of min. chroma.
  • Speaker problems.
  • Intermittent and unpredictable faults on sets with the tuner preset draws.

  • Curved verticals, worse when warm.
  • Power supply transistor 7156 S/C.
  • Incorrect horizontal centering.
  • No colour. after a while.
  • Predominance or intermittent loss of one of the three primary colours (red, green or blue).
  • Patterns in picture. (service info for SBR -4204)
  • Distorted audio.
  • Reduced horizontal size.
  • Coloured area on black and white picture.
  • Venetian blind effect.
  • Insufficient voltages in the HT line.
  • No flyback blanking.
  • Distorted E/W. No width adjustment.
  • Service tips connected on Japanese VCR's.
  • No green signal output from IC (TDA3560).
  • No function, 300V can be measured at electrolytic C460.
  • Vertical bounce. Reduced vertical size.

  • Too much brightness and/or very low contrast permanently or intermittently. (service info for SBR -4204)
  • No or poor audio. Picture OK .
  • Blank raster. Flyback lines.
  • No or intermittent picture. after warm-up.
  • Afterglow at switch off.
  • Line pairing disappears when brilliance/contrast is reduced. (4204 tip from SBR)
  • Trips (intermittently).
  • No low band.
  • Shuts down. after warm-up.
  • After operating for several hours, field contracts and severe fold over at the bottom.
  • Intermittent or no colour.
  • Brightness uncontrollable at max.
  • Picture goes to peak brilliance, then hiccups.
  • Colour flashing. (SBR - 4204 information)
  • Blown fuse FS1191 (3.15A).
  • IC TDA2571AQ (4822 209 80646) no longer available.
  • Width and east/west co-ordination are faulty.
  • No raster.
  • Channel change is not possible. Sometimes TV goes into standby and tries to switch on.
  • Will not change channels and sometimes go to standby mode when first switched on.
  • Intermittent colour.
  • No horizontal output.
  • White screen. Flyback lines.
  • Plopping on sound.
  • Teletext is missing or intermittently corrupted.
  • Stuck in standby.
  • Grey screen.
  • Dark picture.
  • Excessive blue.
  • Noise on picture and slight flashovers on sound.
  • Dead.
  • Intermittently volume increases by itself.
  • Cramp at bottom of picture.
  • Background noise.
  • Video is missing, small amount of chroma. (service info for SBR -4204)
  • Picture would occasionally oscillate in size, very intermittent fault.
  • No or intermittent audio.
  • Loud audio.
  • No picture. Blank raster. after a few minutes.
  • Incorrect vertical centering.
  • Changed code numbers.
  • No HV.
  • Pulling at the bottom of the text display.

  • No blue permanently or intermittently.
  • Switches on/off with a slight noise.
  • Bent verticals getting more severe as appliance warms up.
  • No picture. Audio OK . (4204 SBR repair tip)
  • Intermittently goes to standby when trying to switch on. Impossible to change channels.
