VX5000 / SENTRA [Video recorder - VHS HiFi]

The EURAS repair tip database for professional technicians and service engineers supplies the following faults for VX5000 / SENTRA.

List of fault symptoms:
  • Squeaks in play. Squeak stops when pause is selected. (SENTRA - VX5000 information)
  • Squeaks in play, ok when pause selected.
  • Does not tune channels.
  • Random failure to store channel information but only for channel 2.
  • No colour during timer recording.
  • Appliance is dead, channel LED is lit.
  • No function, the power lamp does not light up.
  • No drum/head rotation.
  • PB or REC for a while, then stops.
  • No functions and tape ejected.
  • Does not accept a cassette/other loading problems.
  • Appliance stops after just a few minutes in record mode. (VX5000 tip from SENTRA)
  • Squeaks in play and squeak continues when pause is selected.
  • PB is ok, but the EE picture is noisy. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Tuning drifts. (picture attached)
  • Chroma flickering, pause OK. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Intermittently dead.
  • Unable to operate the appliance from the remote control.
  • Line synchronisation is missing. (picture attached)
  • Tuning drift after a few hours.
  • Low sound level or poor h.f. response.
  • Occasionally bad picture.
  • Intermittently clock fades away.
  • Tuning does not work correctly. After a short time the tuner is intermittent. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Appliance is affected by mains-borne noise, eg. when a fluorescent light is switched on or off. Unit then eg. enters stop mode.
  • Occasionally capstan does not run. When it does the picture search starts running fast and can only be stopped by switching the appliance ON/OFF. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Noisy picture during or following trick-mode operation.
  • "Moire" in the picture during playback. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Difficulty in tuning channels B and D.
  • CUE and REV do not function. Capstan runs quickly when these buttons are pressed.
  • The remote control operates only once.
  • Lose timer and clock information during a power interruption.

  • Will not tune properly.
  • The appliance goes immediately to timer"on". Clock and timer do not work (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • No sound on PB and E-E mode.
  • Dead. Looks like power supply fault and no clock.
  • Picture runs through vertically. Fault does not occur regularly.
  • Capstan motor turns too fast after selecting CUE or REV.
  • Appliance is dead, standby LED is lit.
  • Reel motor drive missing.

  • When reset fails to work set appears to be in timer mode with operate and record led on and no display.
  • The head is defective.
  • Crackling on sound, EE and video.
  • Occasionally only half video picture visible, occasionally with interference. Looks as if it could be a worn video head.

  • After plugging in the mains plug, the power LED lights, but the appliance does not take any other functions. (+ extract of circuit diagram)

  • Tape remaining counter reads four hours with certain three hour tapes. (VX5000 SENTRA repair tip)
  • When connecting to mains via the AV socket appliance switches every TV over to AV.
  • Appliance will not search forward or reverse, goes to stop and then winds. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Noisy FF and REW.
  • Set shuts down intermittently or sometimes fails to power up from cold.
  • Dead - no clock display.
  • No E/E function, refuses cassette. The station display does not light up. (picture attached)
  • VCR dead or no clock and no functions for 3-30 minutes. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Appliance accepts a cassette but then no further functions, including eject.
  • No function. No display and power LED does not light up.
  • Loading motor does not run. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • During play the capstan runs too fast (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Capstan motor drive is missing.
  • During PB of a pre-recording the colour in the top half of the picture is darker. Using an own recording the picture jitters badly or it runs through. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Searches for channels continuously. Channel changed after a few secs.
  • Clock and screen functions missing.
  • Lines in the picture and the sound is distorted. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • All functions off, no display and no power light lit.
  • The appliance is dead or there is no clock or functions operative for 3 to 30 minutes. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Would accept a cassette but after that there were no further functions, including eject. (VX5000 tips)
  • The tape is stuck, freeze frame jitter the timer does not work. Programming is not possible. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Not accepting cassette.
  • Switches off in REW.

  • Goes into play then immediately returns to stop.
  • No picture in playback and record. EE picture is ok. (picture attached)
  • Programming is not possible.
  • On PB the sound howls.
  • RCU does not work.
  • Runs slow after 1/2 hr. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • The tuning drifts, the memory is faulty. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Interference lines in the picture and the sound is distorted. (part of circuit diagram displayed)
  • Dead no functions.
  • No function. Clock OK.
  • Capstan is intermittently too fast during PB/REC. No REV (no LED display).
  • Appliance switches off during rewind.

  • Usually will not stop during search tuning; sometimes stops and stores but when channels are changed the previously stored channel remains for 5 secs before changing to the newly stored channel.
  • Intermittently cassette or tape loading motor stops. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • Various Y/C faults, eg. unlocked colour.
  • When timer "on" is operated the appliance starts to play. The clock and the timer do not work. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Poor or noisy REW/FF.
  • Appliance goes wild.
  • Stations can be tuned but not stored. The VMM voltage has risen from -28.7V to approx -22V. (picture attached)
  • Difficulty loading.
  • The head drum motor does not run. (with circuit diagram extract)
  • Playback and own recordings are badly distorted. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • No tape transport. After replacing idler wheel this is no longer pressed against the motor shaft of the threading motor.
  • Switches off in REC, both in normal and timer modes. PB OK.
  • The clock can be adjusted, but the timer function is disturbed. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Occasionally capstan motor runs too quickly. (extract of circuit diagram attached)

  • Snowy PB picture.
  • The lacing motors do not function. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
  • No operation.
  • After approx 1 sec in CUE switches over to FF.
  • Capstan motor speed varies when hot.
  • Dead, apart from some pieces of gibberish in the display.
  • No functions or displays.
  • Failure to initialise.
  • Does not accept tape.
