R4000 / TCE [Video recorder (drive)]

The EURAS repair tip database for professional technicians and service engineers supplies the following faults for R4000 / TCE.

List of fault symptoms:
  • Tape is laced up, head drum rotates, threading bolts half return, appliance switches off with tape loops.
  • Switches off, especially at channel search.
  • No Canal Plus sound decoding. VCR goes to standby.
  • No Standby LED segment. Lit only in Eco mode. No terrestrial channels. Original RC does not function, while a universal one does. A few days later, VCR functions correctly if appliance is unplugged during this time.
  • Drops out after 5 mins or more in REC. PB OK.
  • In PB or when inserting the cassette, it is ejected with the tape unwound or broken.
  • Dark display. Other functions OK .
  • Picture without chroma. Records with colour.
  • Destroy of RP51(39R).
  • PSU does not switch on and makes a "click-click" noise. (TCE - R4000 information)
  • Display is weak then nothing.
  • No monitoring, sound or video.
  • No picture. Audio OK .
  • Cassette mechanism not functioning.
  • Cassette compartment does not sink completely.
  • Random operation of PB in LP.
  • Does not accept tape.
  • Ticking noise.
  • Switches to standby. after a few seconds.
  • Tape not taken up.
  • PSU pulsates.
  • Tape jams. Poor or random reel drive. PB does not always start up.
  • E²prom reprogramming procedure.
  • Does not record colour in SECAM.
  • PB counter is not displayed. Display indicates "E". Cassette loading and going into PB are correct
  • Tape curl when changing drive unit function.
  • Switches off drive unit function. (TCE - R4000 information)
  • No front panel function.
  • PSU makes a "tic tic" noise and the LEDs flash.
  • No start-up. Head drum judders. No display.
  • Position of the switches for RCUs RCT8000P/RCT8004 which are compatible with the R4000 range.
  • Cylinder motor jerks only.
  • Unlaces slowly and in snatches.
  • Installation menu.
  • Doesn't load tape. When switching off and inserting tape, it is loaded correctly at voltage recovery and unloading cycle is performed normally.
  • Picture jitters. Motor rumble.
  • No functions.
  • Occasionally no quick REW is possible.
  • No start-up. No display.
  • Does not record in SECAM and PB of recording in black and white. Functions well in PAL.
  • Drive misfunctions. No FFW or REW. (R4000 tip from TCE)
  • Interference lines.
  • Dead.
  • Power supply circuit.
  • Colour is slow to appear in SECAM PB.
  • No start-up.
  • Cassette compartment is no longer fully coupled to the drive. After pushing in it is no longer led any further.
  • Display indicates presence of a cassette but there is no cassette.
  • No colour in PB.
  • Contents of power supply kit.
  • No picture. No OSD. Audio OK .
  • Poor unloading.
  • Contents of Thomson mono chassis power supply repair kit.
  • Switches off by itself. after a few seconds.
  • Inverted video during SECAM PB.
  • Switches on only after several start-up attempts. Switches off, when tape is inserted.
  • Display lights up when appliance starts to function, drum runs and cassette presence indication is lit although no cassette is inserted. Impossible to insert cassette.
  • Tape unwinds when Stop is pressed.
  • No or very weak display at switch on. Cassette remains stuck. When PSU heats up, display lights up even more.
  • Tape loop if you switch from REW to Stop.
  • Variations in the voltages.
  • Squealing from PSU.
  • No function. Front panel LEDs flicker.
  • Goes to standby when selecting REW and winding. Functions OK in PB and REC.
  • Colour failure with cassettes of poor REC quality. (R4000 tip from TCE)
  • Does not accept cassette but indicates cassette present with the compartment in high position.
  • Poor operation of the drum motor: it either runs jerkily, runs the wrong way or does not run at all.
  • Intermittently no colour. HF cuts out after a few minutes.
  • Intermittently tape is not ejected completely and is retracted again.
  • Impossible to insert cassette. At switch on the display does not light up.
  • Cassette compartment can be pushed down manually.
  • Difficulties when raising cassette.
  • Possible information of tape loops. Capstan does not run or runs too quickly. (+ extract of circuit diagram)
  • Erratic operation of the function control motor.
  • No fast winding.
  • Tape loops form at initialization.
  • Cassette tray moves sluggishly and can easily be stopped with a hand. Difficult ejection.
  • In PAL PB average quality tape, green becomes black and white in parts.
  • Power supply collapses then no functions.
  • Tape gets curled during cassette insertion.
  • Tape jams, or leaves a loop of tape on eject. (extract of circuit diagram attached)
